What is it with the people and rabbits lately?? I am selling rabbits as fast as we can breed them. Meat rabbits and breeders. New Zealand Whites. I am actually making money on this which has surprised me. I am getting 30 to 40 bucks each for mature breeding does that I have about 10 dollars in. meat pen grow outs at 8 weeks for 7.50 each. I have about 2.50 in them. Lots of people now Identifying as Survivalists looking for easy meat production. Never have I seen so many requests. I am now starting to take deposits on future rabbits. Im a bit in shock.
Ive heard it here locally as well , not sure maybe because they are some of the cleanest meat one could eat. Its my guess not sure why.
I just took two orders for fall rabbits with cash deposits. First time for that ever. My bucks are very happy boys. They be workin overtime
Rabbits are great to raise for food...going to start mine this fall. Remember have to eat them with something...man cannot live by rabbit alone
People are scared poopless that Hillary will win (and they should be scared) so are preparing for the worse. I make no attempt to hide my fears as I have bought more dried beans/rice/potatoes, ammo and freeze-dried stuff in the last 2 months then the entire time that I have been back stateside (~19 months).
Not to pick at words, but you can survive just on rabbit. You just have to be willing to eat the brain and organs for everything your not getting from the prime meat. At least that seems to be the results I've researched while trying to get into raising them. (I'll be suplimenting those part of at all possible - I don't even like liver and onions lol). Great point! Also, it's one of the few fertilizers you can put straight into the garden without it sitting for a period of time to 'cool down'. There is a guy inside the city in Portland, OR that has a great set up in his garage. It been a year but if I can find the video I'll post it.
Rabbit starvation results from low fat, low carb, protein-only diets This is what I have always been taught...if it's not true then all the better!!! I will have to do some more reading
I'll see if I can dig up where I read that - but I had the same understanding of needing more fat then rabbit meat provides (and not being an organ guy, that little tidbit stayed with me) (also part of why I keep coconut oil in my bags). I believe squirrel is the same thing.
Been reading around on the net and near as I can figure tame raised rabbits have a slightly higher fat content than wild ones...that being said every site I went to said that with rabbit supplements still need to be added to keep you from getting protein poisoning. I will keep reading and see what else I can find out for us
I can't seem to find a single reference to eating the organs for fat content so I either made it up or the source I saw it from wasn't informed. Either way seems I'm wrong about this one.
We are all here to learn brother ..there is no right or wrong in learning something new...there is just learning the facts
For those who have never tried it, rabbit makes excellent sausage. I used to have a neighbor who had a pretty big rabbit business. As they got too old to breed, he sold me the older ones cheap. They made great sausage.
I've known it since I first hunted them at 8 yrs old. Squirrel, quale & rabbit were my quarry back then, God I miss being a kid in the 60's....
yeah, we do that with older breeders, too. When they get those good layers of fat on them, they can make excellent sausage.
yum I love me some rabbit, I also heard you could eat the liver and heart to beat the lean poison, I don't know if it is true or not but I eat it anyways taste good to me. same with chicken love the liver heart and gizzard.
rabbit livers and organs are pretty mild, even my kids will eat rabbit livers without noticing. We add organ meats to the sausage, and it's great.
