I live in New Hampshire and I know that the rating is meaningless in our area, along Mass border, and is rapidly reaching that for the state as a whole. The young people have been brainwashed by the schools and mass media, many people have moved in with all their liberal baggage, and our mass media is dominated by our neighbors. Peterborough, two towns over, has a black lives matter banner flying, have meetings etc demanding immigrants rights, and the female pastor of the Unitarian church had an article in the local paper today about how the koran was so much like the Bible and we shouldn't be afraid of it. Kelly Ayoute is running for reelection against our present woman governor for the US Senate and most of the present governor's money is coming from out of state. The "greens" with most of the money from out west will stop any new pipelines, wind towers, dams, power lines etc. We are still somewhat conservative in our state economic policies, but special interest groups, prisoner rights, mental ill, teachers unions, poverty groups, immigrants. etc are all in state and federal courts trying to force the state to spend more for their group. If Hitlery wins, freedom as we once knew it will be gone. It is ironic, I have friends buried in a cemetery in Peterborough that proudly highlights the grave of the drummer that called the men out at Concord to assemble on the common when the British marched in to seize their guns and powder. That did not work out well for England in the long run.

Hrm, rankings are skewed a bit. When it comes to personal freedom, I believe they should have calculated the militarized police state into the equation first, and right to bear arms second. As I calculate, only a few states qualify (in no particular order) Arizona, Texas, Alaska, New Hampshire. There are some very good states close to these, some are better for jobs and fewer legislative garbage, but if they are hard on the right to bear arms and have a heavy militarized gestapo, none of that other stuff matters to me. I find it comical they list Maine so high on the list. Stay clear of the police in Maine, Massachusetts, and New York.
Thank you Minuteman. I went back and reread that Nov 2015 topic of the month and it is even more important now than it was then. With the Hitlery looking to be anointed soon, I am taking a lot of the comments very seriously. While it is a little late for OPSEC in most matters, rifle you bought 10 years ago is registered with the gov, papers either in bound book on deposit or in gun shop, I don't think buying things on credit card from Sam's club is a good idea at this moment. Keep your powder dry and most of it buried! Interesting in seeing the rankings, it is based on the perceived effects of the laws on the books etc and not how they are selectively enforced. In Nashua NH it is legal to have a pistol, but if a liberal neighbor "thinks" that you brandished it, ie touched it in an argument, the police and courts will push it and if lucky, you will only be out a few thousand for a lawyer and still have the right to own a gun. You are free to carry it with limits, but the bleeding hearts are out there and that includes the media. I dropped my subscription to the Nashua paper as I saw no sense in supporting an organization that was out to destroy my beliefs. Get a high ranking in press freedom.

Newly updated results - Florida now number one. I'm shocked that AK isn't in the top 5, from a practical perspective it has to be number 1 regardless of state policies. The big government social policies of the West Coast states continues their decline. Oregon and Washington will likely have further firearm restrictions next year. Washington residents who have been following I-594 know the fix is in after courts reversed themselves and allowed illegally gathered petition signatures to be accepted "just this one time". That -4 represents the 4 places it's fallen since last update. It means that your freedoms are being eroded... Ranked 30th isn't all that good to start with though. My Montana is up 8 spots. That's a huge jump! Not nearly enough for me and how the blazes are we being beat out by Virginia? Something in their math seems off... What I don't understand is how Colorado can be anywhere near as high as it is... The dumbycrats there have destroyed the state. They are a political nightmare now.
