Canadian rescued near 'Into the Wild' bus

    Posted: August 28, 2016 - 12:03am
    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

FAIRBANKS — Authorities in Alaska say a Canadian man is the latest person to be rescued near an abandoned bus made famous by the book and film “Into the Wild.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported 22-year-old Matthew Sharp of Manitoba was rescued after he was unable to hike back because of minor injuries and high river levels.

Alaska State Troopers say a personal locator beacon registered to Sharp was activated early Thursday morning. Troopers responded by helicopter and found Sharp, who was flown to Fairbanks.

“Into the Wild” chronicled the life and death of 24-year-old Chris McCandless, who hiked into the Alaska wilderness in April 1992 with little food and equipment.

He was found starved to death in the bus almost four months later.

The bus has long been a destination for those seeking to retrace his steps.

I read that story , and also read some of the comments associated with it . One commenter said he did quite a bit of hiking in different areas . He stated that you can take a device that you just push a button and sends out an alert , some type of survival beacon . He stated that it is known up front that if you push that button , you have to pay the rescue services $ 6000 dollars . Not sure if this is a minimum or not . Whether this is true or not I don't know .

    Plan on paying it.
If you can afford an ELT then you can/ should be willing to afford the ride.
If you are doing risky things ,don't think your self exempt from the similar consequences .
That's why when I go hunting ,I don't take the least capable weapon possible, there's nothing to prove, even if you survive it.
Except you were really stupid , and accidentally got away with it.
So many day hikes turn into something much longer and it boggle's the mind that people that just survive it, do it repeatedly till luck runs out. then fools that fallow their bad examples ...........
never mind no one listens any way.

    Solution:
Some one take 5 gallons of gas out there and light that bus up.
Or just stop looking for people trying to do their own "into the wild reboot", just allow history to repeat its self.

A stick of dynamite should remove the bus and most of the attraction some people might have with it, which could prove fatal again.

These seem to be mostly young people who are too idealistic and not as practical as you get with some mileage. I've turned my odometer over several times, read the book but have zero desire to ever visit the area, as it's easy to get killed in any remote place if you aren't careful. Plus, when your in your 20's you are invincible and are never going to die...

I like the "quit rescuing them" solution...has the added effect of chlorinating the gene pool a little.

I do not get why someone who is hiking, with a beacon is considered an idiot. Note to self: do not go hiking because if I get hurt or in trouble, I will be labeled an idiot.

Well of course they had to save this nutter, he is probably a Billary supporter, or at least a lib-tard.

No, hiking with a beacon is a GOOD idea. Hiking to a bus where some idiot died, for some sort of pilgrimage to that idiot and then not dying there to show your true love of being an idiot is stupid. If you are not prepared and stupid, it makes things a lot more difficult, no matter what you are doing.

No, @Motomom34 He wasn't an Idiot for having the Beacon, He was an Idiot, because he didn't learn a DANG THING, by reading the Book....
What Killed the Original Idiot, was High Water Levels in the Rivers, and Streams in the Area, when he tried to Walk Out, after he ran out of food. Then he ate the Poisonous Plants, that look similar to the Eatable Stuff, and got Sick... and DIED....

There is a GIANT difference, between Hiking in the FlatLands, and Trekking thru the Alaska BUSH.... and there just are NOT any other Folks, around to bail a person out, when they get a "Minor Injury" and are that for out.... McCandles was found by a couple of Hunters, long after he was DEAD...

The Alaska State Troopers have Coppers stationed around the State to facilitate these kinds of Rescues... Usually they access the FACTS, of each case, on a Case by Case Basis, to determine, if the State will seek reimbursement. Some Cases, especially in BAD Wx, the Army our of Ft Richardson, or the USCG out of Kodiak or Sitka, will do the Rescue... They use it for Training Missions, and usually they do NOT charge the Person.... I had to be Medivac'd by the USCG, last year, when I collapsed a Lung, due Broken Ribs in a Fall, 8 Days, before. Nice Ride, 5 hours before SunRise, and Raining Cat & Dogs.... No charge, and I say "Howdy" to the USCG Chopper, on the Aircraft Unicom, every time they fly by, and thank them for their Service....

It is not a rare thing-
    Hiking The Stampede Trail
They even have a forum and a FB page.

Look at how many people die climbing Everest. Some people believe in challenges, doesn't make them idiots.

All over the world, idiots go on pilgrimages, and die, or have to be rescued in the process; just that some pilgrimage destinations are seen to be more enobling and pious than some obscure bus in the backwoods of Alaska.

The suggestion of not rescuing such pilgrims to chlorinate the gene pool is an excellent one, and I for one would endorse the utter destruction and eradication of such pilgrimage destinations, to deter would be idiot pilgrims....they could start with Santiago de Compostela for one. Amawalker: MEMORIALS TO PILGRIMS WHO DIED ON THE CAMINO

[IMG] It may take more than just a few sticks of dynamite to sort this pilgrimage magnet out.

Edit: This post died, but like Lazarus, got resurrected again. I thank those involved in saving it from oblivion. I want to make clear that I am not inciting or advocating any illegal act against any shrine...religious or secular...be it abandoned buses or cathedrals etc....My remarks were a reductio, ad absurdum commentary on the harrumphing by some here about people who embark on risky endeavours, who consequently inconveniently rely on others to pull their chestnuts out of the fire that they lit for themselves. I find it peculiar that folk who believe that the life that is so precious that it should not be allowed to be aborted, could be neglected when that same life could be saved via SAR. By the same token, I believe that the cost of rescue should be borne by the rescued, where the rescue is due to the rescued's negligence.

I have no problem with facing challenges...though I do prefer challenges that accomplish something.

I do have a problem with people going into an environment for which they are not prepared except for their possession of a panic button so somebody must come and save their butt...risking theirs in the process.

Idiot or not, I don't have to pay for their mistake, so it's no skin off my back.
Besides, they are active and not playing Pokemon GO! and it's better than sitting behind a computer.

There are lots of places more dangerous than big, bad Alaska, too. ;)
