Some claims are being made here... anyone have more info?

Russia appears to be gearing itself up for a nuclear war.

A mind-blowing 40 million people, almost a third of the country, will be taking part in a civil defence exercise from the 4th to the 7th October.

Putin and his officials have spoken out about a US attack that they believe will happen after the two countries cut ties over the conflict in Syria.

Russian media announced that Putin's ministers have built nuclear bunkers which have the capacity to hold Moscow's 12 million residents.

The unprecedented move will see more than 200,000 specialist units as well as the military, fire services, local governing bodies and paramilitary divisions all take part in the exercise, which is being coordinated by the Emergencies Ministry of Russia - EMERCOM.

This drill follows on from Russia's military manoeuvers, which involved 8,000 troops at the end of August.

To add to fears, the US secretary of state Ash Carter has previously spoken about a potential plot Russia has to launch an 'unprecedentedly terrible attack'.

Russia has 7,300 nuclear weapons, compared to the US, which has 6,970.

I doubt that a disparity of 300 warheads will make much difference if Russia and the US start Nukin' it out....there's still more than enough on each side to pretty much obliterate the other, and much of the rest of the world to boot!

Evidently, these civil defence drills have been implemented annually over the past 4 years, with 10s of millions involved, so nothing new. Should the dreaded nuclear holucost eventuate between the soviet....um, I mean Russia and the USA, it will be interesting to note whether the annual Russian civil defence exercise will actually be effective in salvaging anything of the Russian nation from the radiation contaminated rubble. It looks to me like an annual keep the soldiery and citizenry paranoid and busy to me.

Edit....one way of massive military deception is to establish a pattern...this has been a four year pattern thus far of civil defence exercises in Russia.....I'm betting that the best time to test the Russian nuclear arsenal against US targets would be during the annual Russian civil defence exercise......I'm betting Hillary's re-election campaign in 2020 would probably be an opportune moment. Republicans and Democrats will be so blinded by the cut and thrust and backstabbing of their own domestic politics to even notice the increased threat! ;)

They are sending them all to a "Nuclear Free Zone" based on the success of "Gun Free Zones" in the US...

More like 300 old warheads were retired, and not replaced. Not storing and maintaining 300 nuclear warheads might represent a considerable budgetary saving to the US national treasury....if it weren't squandered on other programs, such as pork barreled faith based initiatives.....now, if churches were no longer tax exempt, I bet the USA could afford to have 600 more nuclear missiles than they are presently touted to have. ;)

I wouldn't put too much stock in any drill or any training actions in Ol' Mutha Russia just yet! Putin is no dummy and he knows what pushing the big red button would mean to the world! I say leave the man alone and let him do what he needs to do and stay the hell out of his business! If Obummer has his panties in a twist over the Syrian thing, maybe he should pull us out and let the Russians deal with it there way! Me thinks that would be a better deal any way! I will get worried when millions of scared Russians are seen to be actually be moving out!

The Russian government drills their people for better odds of survival. The US government gives us bread and circuses.

and the Russians are the bad guys?

One would think the government that at least attempts to protect some of its people would be the good guys, while the government that only attempts to protect themselves and leaves the people fat, ignorant and unprepared would be the bad guys.

Stay asleep...better to remain in blissful ignorance of reality, right?

Have to wonder if it's worth preparing for a nuclear event. If it's widespread, the fallout will kill all sources of meat on the surface which will not only become carrion, but radioactive carrion. Plants may uptake the radioisotopes from the soil, so even they won't be edible.

So unless you have an underground barn with enough uncontaminated feed and water to last however long the half life of the fallout is, there won't be much for humans to eat, once stored food supplies are exhausted ... ???

I'm certainly no expert on the subject. But it seems to me the odds of surviving such an event are kind of slim and will depend on a lot of sheer luck (and wind direction at the time) even well outside of any blast zones.

Kinda depends on the "event". Total nuclear war...yeah, might as well just stick our heads between our knees and kiss our butts goodbye. But both governments have this notion of a "limited" use of nukes that will not escalate due to the lack of huevos of their opponent....and sadly they could be right. In that case it may be plenty survivable...to those who were prepared.

Of course I'm one of those people who don't surrender before the first shot is fired in anger...or after, despite what looks like overwhelming odds against survival. Throughout history people have faced situations where survival seemed impossible.,..and the majority of those people probably didn't survive...but some of them did. I'd prefer to make the attempt to be the latter. ;)

It seems that you need [sarc2][sarc1] signs to give you a heads up, that sarcasm is intended in the post......methinks you protest too much....if the American government had invested in involving 40-60 million American citizens (civil and military) in mandatory annual civil defence training and exercises, the American citizenry would have The executive and the legislative's collective genitalia flying from flagpoles nationwide....that's the reality of the situation.

Are 40-60 million American citizens going to stand for that kind of intrusive big government??? Conservatives would be the first to complain about nanny socialist government taking away from individuals their responsibility for defending themselves. There are enough paranoid folk here who are beside themselves when FEMA actually does conduct disaster exercises.

It's ok, chimo....portraying me as ignorant of reality doesn't strengthen your own argument, it just highlights a dishonestly fallacious rhetorical ploy that indicates a distinct lack of intellectual generosity. It says more about you than it does of me.

One thing that Soviet... ahem I mean Russian national governments learn, is that without peons to defend them, they are toast. It's not beneficent altruism that is motivating Putin, but self interested concern for his own personal survival....he just needs enough of his workers and fighters to survive to keep his regime going beyond a MAD exchange. The survival of individual Russian serfs is incidental to that aim.

He may be perceived to be a good guy to his own people at the moment...but if he renews a Soviet type dictatorship, the choice between being nuked, shot, or worked to death in a Gulag will probably be moot. But nice of you to remind us all that he and his government are "good fellas". [ROFL]

On the contrary. It would be the left complaining about spending the money on nuclear preparedness and not on welfare for the inner cities and illegal aliens from down south.

The left complained for years about the money spent on the space programs. But the scientific knowledge gained in achieving such a goal has resulted in advancements that have benefited everyone. Now the money goes to welfare and benefits no one. The space program now does "Muslim outreach", which benefits only terrorists.

I have no doubt that both the right and the left in the USA would object to the scale of civil defence preparation and treasure invested presently by Russia, if it were applied to the USA....each end of the spectrum, vocally objecting, based upon their own ideological prejudices. Legislators and presidents don't, evidently have the stomach for fighting that battle any earlier than they are forced to....and by then, it will probably be too little and too late. Virtual dictators, like Putin, don't have to worry overmuch about the democratic process as much as a constitutional, republican style of democracy might. Oh well, I guess dusting off cold war civil defence pamphlets might help!

Edit: It seems that the USA did have some mass "Atomic" defence exercises back in the days of McCarthyist paranoia...during the early period of the "cold war".

    (emphasis mine)

Nothing much has changed, I suspect.

The reality of the situation is that the US government DID used to involve the population in regular civil defense training and drills, the the population had no problems participating. But I guess US history is hard to come by down under, eh mate.

But hey, keep regurgitating the neocon talking points...they must be better known there in Oz than any actual US history.
