    Well, there goes my reservation........

I am going to have to back out on this. There is a family issue that may occur over this period of time. As such, I need to leave my schedual available for a short notice trip to TX. As much as I want to meet some of you, my extended family needs to come first. I don't want to have people counting on me, only to have to back out at the last moment.

Sorry if this produces any problems with anyone. Hope any who gather have a great time.

    Well, here we are again.

I think we have tried to get together about 5 or 6 times now and the distance and logistics, well... You get the picture.

We all live too far apart to pull this off at 1 location. I suggest we look to some regional meetings. We can break the continental US into 5 regions:

    • Northwest
    • Southwest
    • Midwest
    • North East
    • South East
Maybe we should have some seperate 'small' sub-forums for these regions, planning, and meet & greet functions. I'll work on this and promise to make it unobtrusive to the look of the main forum.

On Seacowboy's point above on Virtual Rendevouz, (Which I turned back into a physical meet), I suggest we employ a service other than the SM forum for a more real time meeting. I have been playing with Skype the past few days. Anyone can sign up for a skype account, buy a PC headset($8) and make PC to PC calls for free. The beauty of this is that you can conference call something like 99 people at one time. Video is also available but that would need cameras.

I think it would be a GREAT way to have a virtual get together. We could do it monthly.

    whaccha think?

What about Yahoo or another IM service?

Can't a group get together there (I never have - so this is a question, not a statement) for a real time conversation?

I suppose that would work too. I just think that voice would be better than typing, (we could do that here) and yes, I know Yahoo has voice as well.

    Doesn't really matter to me.

Well, kind of figured it wouldnt be everyone able to make it for a FTF but if others are interested Im still game for hosting a regional and/or national meet. Sorry to hear you cant be sure on it Phishi but if it comes together and the other issue dosnt conflict (since you said it was a maybe) then maybe you could still make it and if the call came then you could already be about half way there. Also if another time would be better that would be fine as well, just let me know if your interested.

On the virtual meet up, dose anyone know how that works with dial up? I KNOW vidio is a lost cause but not sure on the rest.

To reduce the amount of time off work and on the road: As much as I hate to fly commercial airlines, it looks like a viable option for me financially. Roundtrip ticket to Kansas City, Missouri is $244. Summer months would be best for me to get time off work.

If you're wanting to do a regional meeting, here's some options (John Day Fossil Beds-Painted Hills or Three Sisters Wilderness Area) to think about. The Painted Hills is a good option for shooting purposes with the Ochocco Mts and John Day River nearby, hiking into the Three Sisters Wilderness Area or attempting to summit the South Sister would be fun also. Looking down from a +10,000 ft. mountain is an experience you'll never forget. I would have to gear up for a climb though, it's been awhile. REI rents ice axes and cramp-ons for a reasonable price from what I hear. There are alot of high mountain lakes in the area and beautiful scenery even if we didn't summit South Sister. However, we could run across alot of Sierra Club type individuals in the Three Sisters. About all we would need to do the Painted Hills is camping gear, guns, alot of ammo and rafts and/or innertubes for floating the John Day River.

I'm game for a MO get together.

Who's ever hosting it should pick a date and say, "the campout is these dates, who's coming?" and based on responses planning can begin.

So how much intrest is there in a get together here at my place in MO from everyone? Im still thinking it would be a cool deal if we could arrange it.
