I think we also lost a lot of knowledge due to advances in technology and other factors. My grandparents on both sides were subsistence farmers. My parents knew how to farm, but lived in the suburbs. We had a substantial garden and canned. None of my siblings raise gardens and their children no longer have any of the knowledge their previous generations had, and would be SOL if they needed to grow their own food let alone raise animals.

 

There'll always be someone to keep the torch of knowledge burning, and when all else fails...there'll be archaeologists and forensic historians to piece together how things were done back in the day....And perhaps, when all else fails....book people...

 

That's why I go out of my way to support so-called Living History places - farms, blacksmiths, even entire villages like Historic Williaimsburg. These could well be the salvation of humanity - like the Mote in God's Eye (Larry Niven) story set.
