www.paralax.com RFID reader and writer . FRYs has a kit for reading and writing the supposedly secure RFID chip. So what does this mean ? Any one can steal your ID using this device. with in 3"
Most "quality" RFID ChipSets have an Encryption Key that must be transmitted to interrogate the chip.... Usually there are two sets of Keys one for a Reader and one for the OEM/Programmer.... Some have a third for the USER/Owner...
Keep any chipped credit or debit cards inside a metal container or wrapped in aluminum foil - Faraday shield. I keep my chipped credit cards inside a Christmas tin intended for gift cards. Someone with criminal intent can scan your chipped cards in your wallet or purse while standing in line at a store cash register. Right before the bell rings for round 1 - "Defend yourself at all times."
Some concern on RFID chips is not misplaced. But insider data theft is a much larger and proven threat. From the 2013 TARGET data theft. Expert who first revealed massive Target hack tells us how it happened Target data breach could have been an inside job, security expert says
I was at FRYs and saw the device my self. I have a picture in my phone but I don't know how to transfer it here.

Is it possible to read the data on an EMV chip from a distance? (EMV means Europay, MasterCard and Visa and it's the "chip" embedded into debit/credit cards) The short answer is “not likely.” EMV cards do use RFID. Similar to AM and FM radio bands, EMV chips utilize specific bands to communicate. It’s called Near Field Communication (NFC). NFC radio signals degrade very quickly, and as a result, they can only be transmitted within a very short distance, measured in centimeters. The requirement of close proximity practically eliminates the risk of a device communicating with an EMV chip from a distance. Let's talk a second about the criminal element. These people are going to hit up a dark web site and download packs of credit card data rather than stand around waiting for the opportunity to try and get a single credit card number in the open, and that's assuming they have the tools to do it and the very close proximity necessary (within an inch or less). So, even though it may be wise to use an RFID blocking wallet, it's also not even remotely likely you are going to find your data hacked any time soon because of the use of an EMV chipped card.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Knowing how vulnerable this technology is ,it is wise to be cautious.
another thing to remember, is that your Data, IS NOT encoded on the Chip, in the Card... What is encoded on the Chip is an Encrypted Token, that is transmitted to the Card Company, that then indexes the Customer DataBase, which brings up your Account Information... Data Transmission is also Encrypted, End to End, in both directions... So monitoring the Path doesn't really get a listener anything, either.... and since the Banksters are the ones on the HOOK, for any Fraud, when reported, It is in their BEST Interest to make sure that the Path, and Information, is as SECURE, as Possible...
Canada & Europe has had this for 6years plus OR I have , my chipped IAA or for you folks AAA or CAA card was open while I walked into a Tuilup Casino , I was greeted as "Good Evening Mr smith ! " I was floored & the woman on my side was asking if I frequent this place . Woman was My Wife !& knows I can't / Don't know the Gamble . Card was read from a "Halo" around the door that could set off chips .same as info on keyless entry into my cars & down to the marina that records time & length , plus weight in & out . WE have OWS to TWS & many more ect. = 2010 euro cars and later , 2016 NAC later. COVER your cards . Sloth
I keep mine in some Mylar-lined sleeves, in my wallet. Is it necessary? Probably not. But they cost me a few bucks, which is inexpensive peace of mind. Oh, and my employer, who utilizes a chipped card for computer access (albeit, with a PIN, that the credit card companies screwed up, by NOT utilizing, IMHO), and they started handing out those Mylar-lined sleeves for folks to keep their cards in. Hmmm....
I found a mylar bag that fit's my laptop so that while it's in the back pack it's electronically covered . To some degree at best, it provides another vapor barrier . It might have some effect on EMP but I'm completely counting on it . It's just a margin.
I use sleeves on all cards about 15 cards are used , some are just a strip (fuel card Card-lock) Wait to you see this "Tap & Go " or "Pass over " , no ID required , just a card . WATCH YOUR CARDS & the EULA , using the card says you agree !! being a sheep
Just watched a you tube of a guy looking for funding for a ring that has the RFI chip inside . Only problem I see there is there government would love to force every one to put their money in the bank in a way they can access it at any time ,kind of like what happened in Grease . There are cities that have tried to force being cashless but I haven't heard how it's worked out . the effort supposedly was to curb sales of stolen goods. "outlawing yard sales". trouble is now people can have an app on their phone that allows people to do credit and debit transactions . so much for that.
Yep...THAT right there. I will never have a debit card that allows direct access to my account...Credit card is the way to go if you use plastic. IF I didn't buy it, I ain't paying for it...simple as that. Mine card info has been stolen several times, each time I simply dispute the charges, they send me a new card and life goes on. Other than we all pay for losses in the long run, in the short run, it's simply not my problem. I get telemarketer calls (the do not call list is a complete joke) offering me a 'lower interest rate'.....I sometimes screw around with them "Why would I care what the rate is....it could be 200% for all I care"......because we only charge what we can pay off each month....same as I only buy stuff for cash until I'm out of cash. What I do care about is no annual fee, and a good reward program. We use a BP VISA card, and most of the time our fill ups are 11 cents/gal....some tax they apparently can't let you out of....the rest is paid for by the rewards.
