Warning Lights on Vehicles

Here is something to ponder, would it be a good thing to have a warning light on your vehicle if SHTF and you were bugging out? Most would immediately say no, do not draw attention to your vehicle. But I have read many times that sheep are obedient and will be in the "helpless" mode when things collapse. We have a few revolving yellow lights that stick to the roof of our cars. I am thinking, if used that people may get out of the way.

If SHTF would if be a semi-good idea to devise your vehicle to look like a rescue vehicle, fire, EMS or something like that? I am not saying to impersonate a sheriff's vehicle but to put a light and decal on as a low grade response vehicle. I do wonder if people would move aside if they thought you were headed to a fire or such. I would also like to hear from monkeys that have evacuated due to hurricanes and such, during traffic jams do people still move aside?

A plough might be more effective.

I would think that if things get so bad that you need a fake fire truck to get out of town...no one will care about someone else's problems enough to move out of the way.

I used to have a black Crown Vic police car with the spotlight. People moved for that sucker on the interstate and cops often waved at me. No decals, no flashing lights, just peoples assumptions.

Won't work in this area. Wherever you have rednecks, you will have yellow flashing lights from folks who plow.
Most people recognize these things. Also, red/blue for police and emergency services draw attention --lots of people already hate police. I wouldn't.

3M-TA3 has the right idea. Fear works best when you can't remain unseen.

I have never evacuated for a hurricane or wild fire in which we have a lot of but I would not do that to my vehicle just because people will want you to help them

I thought of this question because we have lights and also people do pull over. We were on a divided road last night and an ambulance was roaring by, lights on in rescue mode. Everyone pulled over and stopped, even the ones on the other side where the ambulance was not. My son just could not understand why everyone on the opposite side stopped. That got us to talking about how people are programmed to respond to rescue vehicles and such.

I think that if you live in a place like that, you need to leave now.

Is the tank #67 there in the background what I think it is? An old WW2 Sherman?

good eye :) it is indeed WWII :)

    however it is a Russian/Soviet KV-1 variant. Probably a KV-1B heavy tank/assault gun with a 76mm gun

    this is an M4A4 sherman

Always had a soft spot for Sherman's and one of the most impressive things I ever saw was a bridging tank, don't know how practical they were but interesting. Us rednecks are told to have yellow plow lights here and they hassle you if you have your plow truck on the town roads without them. If SHTF, I don't want everyone that sees my truck expecting me to help.

The rules vary depending on where you are.

In my state, you do not necessarily have to pull over and stop for an emergency vehicle; the rules only require that you get out of the way. On divided roads vehicles going in the opposite direction never stop. There's no reason to.

Which just gave me an idea...if everyone is leaving town, why not drive the wrong way in the empty lanes going into town? Of course others will see you doing it, then start doing it themselves and ultimately clog up the road...but by then they will be well behind you.

Ha! I missed the fun. Yes, that's a KV-1 variant not a Sherman, so Sec got that one. :)
I am certain Route Clearance would know better than I, but the other is an M1 chassis. It's not quite as cool as an M104 Wolverine bridge layer, though.

Down here, contra flow traffic is the norm for hurricane evacuation...if you aren't familiar with what goes where, you can end up being directed opposite of what you want.

My truck looks like a highway, parish, or utility vehicle...the amber beacon and (valid) re-entry placard complete the facade...gets better mpg than a bridging tank, too!
