What items besides food and water should you buy Duplicates/Triplicates Plus to have on hand in the event of TEOTWAWKI and retail stores no longer exist? Obviously this depends on your budget and space to maintain them. To simplify things for this thread, let's exclude cars and other high priced items. After your input, I'll probably start another thread asking to rank these items by importance/necessity. If you think some items are a luxury rather than necessity, feel free to say.

I'll start off the top of my head:

    Bicycles
    Tires
    Radio
    Clothes
    Can and Bottle Openers
Tools, Nails and Screws (Hammer, screwdriver, etc)
    Toilet Paper
    (Fish) Amoxicillin
    Aspirin/Tylenol
    Sleeping Bags
    Filter Systems (i.e. Berkey)
    Knives
    Firearms/Bullets
    Batteries
    Shovels
Eyeglasses (For Non Prescription reading glasses ThinOptics are cheap & small)
    Rope
    Sizzers
    Blankets
    Flashlights
    Lanterns
    Portable Cooking Stoves
    Portable Showers
    Towels
    Thermos Bottles
    Bandages/First Aid Kits
    Mirrors
    Backpacks
    Pots/Pans/Plates
    Matches/Lighters
    Candles
    Toothbrushes
    Mouthwash
    Shampoo
    Backscratchers
    Medical/Survival Reference Books
    Large Garbage Bags

I am not sure that buying a long list of stuff makes anyone better able to survive SHTF.

I'm talking about TEOTWAWKI, hence a long term situation where you can no longer buy these items as commerce as we know it no longer exists.

Sewing needles and thread are traditionally VERY high on the list of consumables...very delicate, very hard to make.

I gotta disagree with ya Dunehopper on the Field Surgical Kit. Sorry, but I cannot recommend getting into one of those unless you know exactly what and how to do with one. Chances are VERY HIGH you will cause more trauma then you fix! I know many disagree with me on this, but Trust me, Been there, Done that. 20 years as a Level 1 trauma medic and I can tell ya, don't do it if you don't have very specific and current training!

I agree except that in a life and death situation and it is TEOTWAWKI, you may want to take some action to attempt to save your life or the life of someone else. I do agree it would be extreme, but better than the camp knife...

But on the other side of that bridge.... you have the tools in hand...though you may not know how to use them to their maximum extent.... but if you do run into a person that does, you can outfit them to do the gifts they were given.. and maybe save a person or two... and that is worth every penny. ;)

Sutures or staples and lots of bandages. It's why I recommend the braided line and a couple of good and sharpend 0/2 or 0/3 Salt water hooks! Even better are the Saiwash long shank hooks, that way you can tie off each set one handed while closing with the other. Waxed fishing line is easier to keep wounds clean AND easier to remove when done, and zero chance of breakage. Perhaps a bone saw and spatula for cauterizing after an amputation and that's about the most I would go for!

I wholly agree with this! I know, I am never going to have enough supplies when I am the one that is going to be doing this work. Some times I need to get out of my head so to speak, so thanks for helping me see out side the box! I get a little bent when I see all the recommendations for medical stuff, but I need to remind my self constantly that it isn't about having the skills or not, it's having a chance to save some one, and THAT is what God put me here for! Sorry for bustin on you guys!

Hiking Boots Great idea would have totally missed on that one without your post, thanks. Will have to google "Plumbers Candles" and "Natural tallow bees wax candles" as the only candles I've ever been exposed to were Birthday and Hanukkah candles!

    Good point!!!!!

Can't believe I left out the Good old Hit em with the Axe, Saw is probably a must that due to lack of mechanical skills didn't immediately jump to mind but is on there as well. How often do saws break? How many should one have on hand? Field surgery kit you listed seems a bargain! Thank you, sir

You're probably right on that one but I might get one in case I have someone with me who knows what they're doing. The price surprisingly seems pretty cheap on this model.

That is the first time I have ever seen a back scratcher on a list. Some of those things on your list I also have in duplicate+++ but am starting to re-evaluate. I have all sorts of portable stoves but do I need them? I am thinking of pawning some. Interesting list and also what the members contributed. I think it I would break it down to needs (fire, shelter, water etc...) then see what items can be used for cross-over items. But good brainstorming list. I like it.

*bandanas. I have a few dozen. tarps- are good to have a few

I dare say you'll get better responses if you posed questions AFTER thinking instead of just typing the first thing that comes to mind.

If you have excess, I would consider keeping them for bartering. I would not recommend getting rid of good supplies that could be beneficial in a trade for something you are missing. :)

I have barrels of fuel and different modes of welding equipment including a moderate supply of steel and other metals , so I can continue to build things and barter for making repairs.
Also gas and diesel driven Generators and air compressors .
In stead of using a blower on coal or gas forge, I can use compressed air and governed it with a foot operated blow gun.
Don't forget fire fighting equipment and construction materials. ply wood to cover windows and broken doors. lots of screws and other fasteners.
Real shutters would be a good idea , something decorative on the out side and matching the exterior walls on the in side. that way when you close them ,it would be more difficult to see where the windows are from the out side.
Hand tools and power tools for getting the Job done asap.
I usually have to work alone so most every thing I do takes a lot of preplanning and preparation .
Having spare adds something for barter, puts one way a head in the game, especially if you've got the skills to make the tools perform.
Though you can get stuff on the internet, Books and hard copy information work with out electronics to support them. post SHTF there will be no opportunity to down load any thing.
I have several old books written in the 20s and 30 on how to projects . old books are worth having.
Though medicine has changed , sharpening a knife hasn't .
