  1. Hello. I'm new here and want to be sure that I don't start off on the wrong foot... I'm giving away a free Sputnik Wood Cook Stove ($175) to try to create some word-of-mouth buzz for what I believe is a very important survival/off-grid tool: a very-small-sized wood cook stove (I fabricate these). Id' be happy to make the give-away registration link available to the SM community. May I post the link to the registration here?

Also, my gut tells me that I probably should not have created a whole new thread to ask the question, but as I said, I'm a total greenhorn at this. Advice? Admonition? Kick me in the butt?

Well I would like to see the stove you are talking about. We live in a cynical world so when someone says free, people tend to get suspicious. How long have you been making these stoves and what makes them better then the others?

This probably will not fly but if you would like to tell us about your product, I know I would like to see an image of it.

A phisher, methinks. Pay ME enough, and I'll endorse your product, but I don't need a stove so you'll have to try money.

  5. Hey Motomom34 - It's nice to meet you. I'll try to attach a gif here.

It's cool, and cynicism's good! I've been building these for about 3 years for my own use and for close friends. What makes them better? I don't know that they are. I just know that I'm tired of having good money stolen from me every time I buy cheap Chinese pseudo-product. Know what I mean? Thus, I have not even been tempted to buy commercially-made stoves and thus have no basis for comparison. All I can say is that mine have held up very well and have always gotten the job done for me.

Hopefully, the gif will be visible.

  6. Thanks Merkun - I can respect that. I'm more interested in getting to know the people here than I am in obtaining their email addresses, so I'll refrain from posting the contest link.

Do the legs come off? For example- if you were going to take it camping, is it easy to lug around?

    Whoa, wait a minute. [finger]
Well, it would help you considerably if you spent some time here before dropping a registration link. I know my fellow simians, and if it's one thing we aren't keen on, it's registration for anything --at all --ever. Personal information is critical to maintaining operational security, and no offense, but we don't know you yet. You are welcome to hang around, take part, and drop some links once you have been properly welcomed.

You're OK, CI. moto and Bokor are mods and could as easily as I found your website for vetting.. Frankly, I'm surprised they did not point you to the buy, sell, trade forum, it's the first thing that monkey mods usually do. Put your link in your sig line, no problem.

Feel free to post some pictures and any relevant information about your stove! We get tons of traffic around here, and there's no harm in a guy promoting his work honestly. :)

Nope. First thing I do is drink beer.
Nope, I don't do research for a harmless, well typed introduction in English. But, you can if you want to.

  13. Yep. They simply screw out. They are short enough to be stowed in the firebox itself when needed. The stove pipe consists of two 2-fppt sections.

Sweet. I'm in. I can use it in my tree possibly. :D

  15. Thanks Brokor. Totally understood. Roger and Willco. I'm looking forward to getting to know folks.

A buddy of mine makes stoves out of Ireland, believe it or not. He uses old propane containers.

  18. That's it! Propane tanks are excellent survival/scavenger resources. The steel is relatively thin but of very good quality. Folks, you can make a similar stove yourself if you know how to weld. If not, good time to learn? I didn't know squat about welding until I started building these things. Now, I've got the knack! Just grab that bull by the horns, people!

Of course, we want to properly decompress the tanks, first. Wouldn't want to start welding a tank with some LPG inside. Woo, boY! So, best way to do this...is to shoot it. Right? S-sh-shoot it. From a distance. I actually did this before, but some folks might poop their pants a little. Still, fun as a spectator occasion.

Maybe @BTPost could elaborate on exactly how much explosive is necessary to properly deflate the instrument in question. (He's gonna talk all smart about safety and fluidic dynamics and thermal coupler units and how things explode in Alaska, but don't pay it no mind. All you really want is the stories about lost fingers and stuff.)

Don't need BT's expertise for that, just shoot the valve off, making sure you aren't in the bleve range. Might not burn, but then again, maybe it will.
