What's the Most Affordable Boat to Escape (1 Way Trip) SHTF?

Only way I can think of escaping SHTF in Los Angeles and that's if I do it immediately is to get on a boat till I reach the safest shore. Not knowing anything about boats, what is the most affordable motorized boat that would have enough power to do this as well as storage space?

Blow-boats are not cheap but are invisible for the most part. They don't require fuel or fuel stops and most folks ain't got a clue about how to operate them.

Mythbusters have built a couple boats out of duct tape including one that can use wind. Probably easier to hide a pallet of duct tape in an apartment than a boat.

Should have called this post "excape from Los Angeles".
    Used boat, new motor.
Most people run a motor till it starts to have problems, then they sell it.

Personally I think you may have watched too much Fear the Walking Dead.

A boat big enough to do what you want will not be cheap. You will have to pay monthly storage fees, ect. Not to mention having to master the skills required to sail her in any weather. If stored on a trailer in a lot, you will have to get it to the water and that may be tough in itself. Do what you will, but a 4x4 BOV with a small trailer if needed would be my route.

That alone is subject to argument. However, if you are even remotely serious (which we know you aren't) the time to buy the boat and learn navigation was last year.

Your boat will be stolen and long gone before you can get to it. I wouldn't consider it unless I lived in the boat and had competent skills and a primary, secondary, and tertiary BOL scoped out.

And you are sure adding to the discussion, big boy.

So, are we talking a REAL boat, or something you can pack? Not all that familiar with the AO...and I'm getting conflicting ideas from the answers as to whether you are bugging out to sea or floating up something?

Hard to tell what is adding and what is taking away or what Ed's intentions with these questions are really all about. For sure, they are open ended and unfocused. He depends on responders to do a focusing effort for him, and is delighted when the answers add up in quantity (if not quality.) To say that thread deviations are welcome would be an understatement, especially in the face of the fuzz. Therefore, big boy, there's no surprise that you can't tell if he's headed to sea or something else. Going back and reading his posts, you can see he has stated that he lives in LA in an apartment.

"Most affordable boat to escape" is going to have to be stolen unless the cost of ownership is factored into "affordable." Escape from LA, well, if it has to be classed as an escape under duress, it's already too late. That point, too, has been made and ignored before.

NB, I do NOT advocate theft. Bear in mind that if you own one, 3m-TA3 has it right; it is a very real possibility that it'll be stolen before you can get to it in an emergency.

The 2 best days for a boat owner is the day they get it and the day they sell it.

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

Starting from scratch, the fastest, cheapest, and most available boat is the one you are probably sleeping on.

It's an ordinary box spring mattress, painted with oil based paint.

Here's an Instructable, but don't do the squeeze thing to slant the front end.
Painted Mattress Survival Boat: 19 Steps (with Pictures)

(What a pain!) Just screw on a false prow (pointed) with a triangle of old ply wood and a couple of boards.

Trap some Styrofoam under the prow for added buoyancy and you have a sun deck, Or a place to park your Hibachi.

Easily holds two adults plus maybe 200 lbs of gear.

    Power? Eazy-peasy.

Screw a transom on the back (plywood plus 2X4), and bolt on a 5hp horizontal-shaft lawnmower engine for power. Just extend the drive shaft out like a Dragon Boat, or drop a pulley under the water and run a short shaft to a prop, driven by a v-belt.

Easy to engineer if you have the tinker gene.

It makes a boat that's slow & ugly, but you'd probably only be running at night anyway.

Hey, I got the FIX for this.... Eddie can buy a couple of Gallons of that "Miracle Liquid Rubber" stuff that they sell on Tv, late at night... and then make a Hull, out of it using his Bathtub as a Mold.... The wait for the Earthquake to drop SoCal into the Ocean and haul his ride up on the roof of the Apartment Building, and float off into the sunset.....

Please flee South....the part of Canada that is above California is -30c all year round and nobody lives there except polar bears and wolves.
