Anyone Think Criminals Aren't Evacuating Florida to Rob or is that Movie Fiction?

It looks like people are evacuating in droves in certain parts of Florida unlike Houston and I'm wondering if any of you think criminals are staying put to rob the empty houses or is that something that only happens in a movie?

If it's like Texas, they're headed to Florida. Soon to be followed by the scam artist, fly by night contractors, fake FEMA representatives and lawyers. Oh yeah, I forgot the fake charities soliciting donations for victims. We've seen them all.

Son lives in Fla and I remember his comments about the roofers from hell who descended on his location after a hurricane many years ago. A reliable contractor tries to do his best and is limited by supplies, help, getting rid of shingles, etc, the fly by night doesn't care, uses what ever he can for shingles, lays them as quick as he can with a crew that doesn't care, dumps his old shingles in a field somewhere and makes a killing and leaves. When they find the dump, the new roof leaks as it wasn't flashed right and had bad material used, etc, they can not find the roofers and you and the town are left holding the bag. Same with cars that were flooded, cleaned up, taken north and sold. The con artists often seem to beat FEMA to the disasters.

I am one Floridian who is staying. But then, my part of Florida will be well west of the hurricane track if it follows where it is supposed to. But, I am setting up in my late parents' concrete block home, with no close tall trees.
My own property is a doublewide surrounded by big trees.
Any damage there I can deal with. I am far enough from the coast that tidal surge isn't an issue.

Probably not, they are too busy stealing firefighters vehicles while they battle the forest fires in the PNW..

oil pan 4 I will admit a lot of roofers are a little rough around the edges. A job where you work outside in all kinds of weather, with a heavy material that requires a lot of hard physical labor and skill to place properly and often requires that you remove all the old shingles and flashing, sometimes with the old asbestos shingles in full hazards suit, and all this work is done high in the air on a slippery sloped surface that is easily damaged and with a boss that is trying to get it done as cheaply and quickly as possible to compete with some one who may use illegal labor and all this is dependent on getting it done between rains that may damage the interior of the house and doing it safely creates a little tension on a lot of job sites. New construction is one thing, but reroofing after a storm is a whole different animal.

I mean this in the best possible way but, You really gotta ask that question after watching what happens in many cities after "their" team wins a major sporting championship? After watching the Occupy Wall Street crowd, or what happens after a black criminal is shot by a police officer??
The human animal is just that-an animal with an almost transparent veneer of civility. Capable of the greatest acts of kindness and the most heinous of deeds.

If you ask this question honestly(not just a fluff post) then you are indeed naive and before all else you need to open your eyes to the world around you.

Criminals swarm disaster areas like flies! An insult to flys there. I remember Hurricane Andrew, where the hoodlems, local and imported I'm sure, were mugging N G troopers for their EMPTY M-16's!
My dad told me that there were looters at 1948's Vanport flood, and "profiteers" after. I'm not sure exactly what profiteering meant to dad. To me it means exactly the con men and fly by nighters that we're discussing!

    GOOD LUCK FLORIDA!!!

After Katrina, we saw a shit ton of people hauling scrap building materials presumably to repair/rebuild their own homes, or to sell. This also included a lot of furniture and other personal property that was probably taken with out permission and no one was stopping this or doing any thing about it!
This is also how I got one of my cars and the boat! There was a huge yard full of damaged water craft and the state was selling it off as scrap, had to hire a hazmat crew to clean all the boats and then break them and recycle what they could. I got the boat and paid the fee for cleaning and bought a trailer to haul it off! After a event such as these, there is always a lot of stuff that needs to be delt with at a pretty large cost, and this can really help off set costs when they offer it up for sale at scrap prices!

We all know that every 23 year old is deaf to the advice and urging of parents and grandparents. My eldest granddaughter, against our advice, continued with her vacation plans and flew down to FL this past Monday. I have been urging her to make arrangements to come home to New England but she and her cousins decided they would stay. I have told her that the New England hurricanes she has experienced have nothing in common with a FL hurricane. I guess she got tired of her mother and I calling and texting her that she finally got a flight out today and will be home tonight. What a relief. Her cousins decided to stay in FL and continue their plans to fly back next Wednesday. I'm sorry that was their decision but I'm so glad our little fledgling is coming home before it gets bad.
