Can't wait to hear from the Florida Monkeys as they come back on line. Must admit that u-tube & cell phones actually came through. My Generac 4000 XL generator suddenly began to shut itself off after only a couple of seconds running. Thing 1's other half searched u-tube from his cell and we found a video detailing a problem with the oil sensing sensor. Disconnected the sensor wire bundle and that ended the problem. I'll need to take the generator in for a new sensor once things return to near normal, but during the time off the grid the generator came through. Wishing all the other Florida Monkey's a quick return to civilization.
I am a thrivevor no damage still have power and payed days off vacation hope everyone did as well as I did
Power was only out for me and renters from 2:15am Monday 11 Sept until 4pm or so the same day. Olde fart that I am I often get interrupted and do not complete previous jobs. Last power outage my 1999 battery failed to start my vintage antique (just like me) Hardy China diesel, one cyclinder, huge flywheel, no longer EPA approved (F'em), it is built to last forever. I got a loner battery from my mechanic/personal friend/ and mentor in prepping. Thing started right up as it always has. When I got the new battery and went to install it, 2 things jumped out and slapped me in the face. One I had left the wing nuts with loner battery, and 2, I broke one of the lugs for connecting the trickle charger. Due to other demands on my time these things never were corrected. I told several little white lies about having tested the genny, and low and behold all this rose up and bit a big chunk out of my ass this afternoon. I screwed around for 3 hours before I got the genny started. I was not the problem. I was. All is well and functional now. Duh, Lessons learned! Oh I rode this all out in a 38ft RV snuggled tight to my under construction house north side, just barely lower and partially (inches) under the eaves.
Hey Tac, Did you not get a Hand Crank with that Hardy Diesel? The one I had, came with one... No Battery required... Just spin it up and release the Compression Release... POP, POP, Bang Bang... and away you go...
Irma was downgraded to tropical storm before skirting Tallahassee. We got winds gusting in the fifties, and light to moderate rain. No damage on either of my properties. Lost power for 23 hours at my main property, but never lost it at the other. Just a lot of leaf litter to clean up.
You might take the sensor out and clean it with carb cleaner or starting fluid and give it a try 1st. I've done that on a gen-set with good results in the past. Many times they just get gunked up. All we got out of it was 56 degree temps and a good soaking rain all day yesterday.
Genset Repair folks call Generac Gensets, "GeneJUNK" for a reason... Unless they exclusively work on Generac Gensets, then they call the "Long Term Employment"....
Believe it or not, 12 years ago I got this Generac with the push start for my Father. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer and had one of those electronic oxygen machines. With the exception of an occasional test run every August, it's never had any maintenance. It was probably over due, but I've rode out all the Hurricanes and never lost power so it wasn't a priority. So much to do, so little time. Once the rush of folks that need thier generators repaired to have electricity settles down, I'll take it to Home Depot for an oil change and a new sensor.
