Last night I read about a Water Bottle Survival Kit. I really like this idea, very minimalist but also prepared. Here are the two water bottles that I want to pack with what I would need or what a friend would need if I chose to make a few up for gifts.

These are the double walled stainless steel bottles that seem to be a trend now. One is 32 ounces the other 20 oz. I want to fill them with stuff so they can be used in an emergency.

I was getting stuff out and realized I could never fit all the stuff in so I need to scale back. Help!! What would you put in the bottles?

Here is some of the stuff I was considering:

My compact mirror fits in the 32 oz. bottle but I keep wondering if I need it in the bottle

These are stainless thermos bottles or what? They seem to have wide mouths which is a big plus.

I keep one of these at work, a large Yeti stainless cup. Has 2 gauze pads, medical tape, razor knife, pack of peanuts, lighter, little LED light (1AA size), a pack of fruit punch drink mix from an MRE, and a retired Swiss Army "Tinker" knife. Just stuff I thought to throw in at the time.

Yes, these are wide mouthed bottles. They do great keeping things hot or cold. They are like a modern thermos and some are quite pricey. The Yetis like @Tempstar has are expensive but good quality from what I have heard. Nice list Tempstar. I chose the ones I have because I liked the lid with the handle. The closed handle gives me the option to tie the bottle on to a pack or just a rope and sling it over my shoulder.

I have packed the larger water bottle a few times and go heavy on medical or basics. Working on getting the perfect combo. @Bishop I like the suggestion of sling shot bands because they can be used for medical also. Good suggestion

Pro tip! Use the Nalgene (spelling?) Bottles, they are easily adapted to both the M.S.R. and Katidyne filtration systems! Making for a lighter weight, and clear so you can see what is in them! I keep two in my big back pack, and two in my travel rigs, plus in my BOB! One is food and meds, the other is basic survival needs. Also carry a Pelican 1010 case for pocket duty with more basic survival needs, if I ever lost my pack or bob, am least I have that!

Beat me to the Nalgene comment. Plus they have a much wider mouths making them even more versatile. Don't have a list, but if I build one it will be in a Nalgene.

Single walled stainless can be placed in a fire for cooking or if in snow country for melting snow and making water safe to drink. Lighter than a thermos and sized up to 32 ounces. A bail can be made from stainless wire and sized to fit inside the container to use to heat the container without burning the owner.

I have every type of PSK except the water bottle type. Just never could see the logic of it myself. Just a personal thing, so if it works for you, great! Take it to the woods and try it out. See what works and what doesn't.

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

A nylon net bag large enough to hold everything in the (single-wall) bottle while the bottle is being used to boil drinking water or cook food. Usable also as a fishnet for minnows as either bait or food.

A plastic ice bag large enough to carry a gallon of water in. That's the kind of bag that crushed ice comes in. They're tough, so sharp ice won't puncture them, and watertight, so melting ice water doesn't leak out.

60 ft of 24 gauge dead soft brass wire wrapped around the cigarette lighter. For snares, fishing line, and lashing. It has a breaking strength of about 40 lbs. and can be used for many things.

Room for lottsa nice toys in a bottle that large...

    [coo] idea [winkthumb]

    gotta be :cautious: :cautious: though

some items might cause adverse interactions

other items might contaminate the bottle with hazmat or might cause cross-contamination
finally if :censored: is combined with :censored: plus :censored: n :censored: it = [reddevil][reddevil]

    plus plus plus plus

I don't see double wall practical for hiking /camping ,seeing space is at a premium.
Double wall cannot be used for heating anything ,and it only holds it given temperatures for a while . Once you've consumed the temperature sensitive product inside 1/2 way into the trip then what ? Until it is washed out your carrying double the dead air space bulk .
I have a double wall 40 .oz cup I use at home and in the car but lacking a fixed seal on the lid , it's not something I'd be using on the motorcycle or on the trail .
I have stainless cup for cooking I've made to seal so that it both cooks faster like a pressure cooker and maintains a seal between meals a bit like canning . Between meals while not in actual use I store dry emergency foods in it , air tight. As for carrying water I have bladders collapsed inside my pack till I actually need them. And when the time is right fill them and hang them externally .
Actually for carrying water I wish they made something like a May Wess life vest, putting the water in front of you, balancing the load from the back pack .That and hiding it from the cold during the winter under your coat. Alternatively it could be used as a life vest if conditions proved it necessary.

    Cool idea!
Similar, sort of, to what I keep in my work laptop bag at all times, but I like the use of a stainless bottle as the container. I do agree it should be single wall so you could sanitize water in it.
My little kit fits inn a hard shell eyeglass case:
    Flashlight - 1 AA
    Micro compass
    Micro swiss army knife
    Fresnel lens
    Mini BIC
Unwaxed dental floss - 30 yd roll (remove from case)
    Ferriconium stick
    Dryer lint
    Sawyer mini
    Contractor bag - 33 gal

I have to say that looping a cord thru the handle might well be a "fatal" error. Take it from a guy that used that scheme on a plastic cup handle on a real (glass) themos years ago, things break and so does glass. Now, I can see that this is a different kettle of fish in that the bottles are stainless and the plugs appear rather stout, but I'd still not rely on handle looping. We don't know whether the double wall is vacuum filled or foam filled (there's no link that I could find) and in any case, double walls are extra weight and volume when you are back packing. As a soup carrier when on motor touring, they might be just fine.

I note that many do not like the double walled container. I do have a single wall water bottle. It is okay. It has a material on the bottom that I cannot peal off so I would be reluctant to put it in a fire. It says nothing not heating, whereas the double walled bottle says not to use on the stove. Here is my single wall water bottle. I have a few of these so I can pack them with stuff and give them out. The double walled bottles are bigger so it can hold more. Not sure which is better.

I like the nylon net idea. I thought about if I had to use the bottle for water storage then I need to take what is inside out and carry it. I thought about putting it in my pockets but your idea of a net bag works and they are quite compact plus duel use.

More info please on the m.s.r. and Katidyne that will fit on these.

I've had a couple travel cups similar to that. It's a non skid material that you can set on the dashboard (or the hood of the car when lollygagging or sighting in) and it won't slide off. Neat trick for us klutzes.

    msr gear is good stuff.
