If North Korea Nukes San Diego 150 Miles from Me am I best staying put?

I welcome myself back here. After doing some research it appears that if North Korea nukes the West Coast they will more than likely only Nuke San Diego because of the military presence. I live at least 3 hours away from San Diego in the San Fernando Valley in LA. Using the NUKEMAP by Alex Wellerstein it appears that I am out of range from danger under the most powerful Nuke in existence hitting San Diego. There are no basements allowed in buildings in Los Angeles. I am not quite sure if my apartment building is brick, etc.

If you were me and lived in LA (Yes I know you would never live here and neither should I) would you just stay where you are or attempt to get further away knowing that there will be logjams all over). I imagine trains and planes would be shut down for months. Thanks for your opinion. Kindly do not mention anything about living in LA as that has nothing to do with my question.

 

If you are out of the immediate blast danger area, I'd say stay put - depending on prevailing winds. Find a good place to hunker down and wait it out. But, if the winds will bring fall-out over you, scoot!

 

North Korea will be happy if they can just hit the US, forget about targeting the Naval facilities in SD.

And what the heck are you still doing in CA, get out before they build a wall.

If a nuclear event is announced no one would be able to run from it .
Under normal circumstances travel is slow and go through out southern California.
It's getting worse with jobs and business improving and more people commuting .
And I'm not so sure north k cares about where they hit ,just don't have the common sense to figure that a counter strike would be so surgically accurate coming from the US.
NK is so immature they think since they have a nuclear weapon they are in the 21 century, but their mentality hasn't breached the 19th yet.
The real threat is North Korea's ambition, threatening the world, creating a threat to it's own existence. Too egocentric to see it.

 

Remember this isn't a world super power.
Their rockets are probably going to be accurate to with in a few country zip codes at best.

 

Kim is his own #1 fan, so he won't be tossing any nukes at the US until and unless we invade North Korea and try to depose him like we did Saddam Hussein.

If his decides his own personal Game of Thrones is lost, he may well knock over all the pieces on the board, but it won't be done with firing one nuke at the US.

I'll be by starting WWIII.

Here's the way I see it:

1) We invade North Korea.
2) Kim launches his six nuclear missiles against the US.
3) China (not wanting a nuclear wasteland on their border) warns the US against nuclear retaliation.
4) The US tells China to stuff it and retaliates anyway.
5) China launches on the US.
6) The US launches on China.
7) Russia launches on nobody, hoping to stay out of it and inherit the Earth.
8) China, not wanting Russia to inherit the Earth, launches on Russia.
9) Russia, severely annoyed, launches on everybody.
10) With the extinction of the human race guaranteed, everybody launches everything, because if yer gonna die, you might as well take somebody with ya.
11) In 400,000 years, the dominant life form (Cockroachus sapiens) excavates a porcelain toilet bowl from beneath the radioactive layer in what used to be Nebraska, and decides that primitive cockroaches used them as religious artifacts.

 

One thing to consider @ED GEiN you may not be able to get out because of a government containment. I cannot see the government letting a bunch of people exposed to radiation roam too far. I think they would fence Californians in their state. They could cut off roads and stations troops with orders that no one is to leave the hot zone.

 

What would it all matter when in a mere few weeks the majority of the planet will be dead or dying

I wouldn't loose any sleep over NK launching nukes at the U.S.
What does cause me to loose sleep ( and I do so love my sleep) is what the others have said, China and Russia launching Nukes on every one! Its a powder keg NK and Iran, and with things ramping up in the Middle East, all bets are off. Iran Nukes Israel and India, Israel Nukes Iran, India Nukes Iran, and the entire Middle East glows for thousands of years!
The other Threat from NK is what was posted above, China and Russia pissed at the U.S. for defending it's self against NK, and both reacting with hostilities against the U.S!
if those things happen, go to the highest place you can find, set down in your lawn chair, smoke your favorite blend, drink your favorite scotch and watch the show, then bend over and kiss your ass goodby! No one will survive the after show!

 

If all this happens,,,,,this ^ is my plan,,I don't smoke anymore , but may try one before it all ends to see what I've been missing. ,,,,,no need to run,,,you'll only die tired.

Another thing I've heard recently is China has nukes that can fly under the radar till danger close to impact site.

 

I thought originally like you did about North Korea not having a specific target till every website I googled insisted adamantly that they wouldn't get LA but San Diego cause of military targets. Untul a few months ago I didn't take a Nuclear threat seriously till again the Media said N.Korea could now hit any place in the US. The fact that LA does not allow basements fed into my worry.

Excellent point that I didn't consider. Maybe I've seen too much SciFi on TV but what scares me is the US wouldn't think twice about actually destroying a City to stop radioactive people from roaming. Because of what you just posted, I'd now prefer to get the hell out immediately but the reality of how is the big question with the log jammed roads. Maybe hire a plane or helicopter or boat immediately to get out before we're all confined'

 

@ED GEiN Stay put, but get materials to seal your place off as much as possible in the event of fallout. IIRC you are in an apartment so it should not take very much, just any doors and windows. First thing to do is to store as much water as possible while you can and while it's still fallout free. Then seal things up. Note - you are sealed for a bit watch the CO2.

Do some research on living through fallout and make sure you have the supplies and training you need. You need battery powered radios to get information in the event that the power goes out (along with plenty of batteries). All other standard preps apply as well as the ability to evacuate if needed.

EDIT: Add protective clothing, duct tape, and some sort of breathing protection for when you do need to go outside. Also you will need some sort of strategy to decontaminate when you return.

 

Ed you need to consider that a blast is not only going to contaminate but it will also have a shock wave that will have major impact. IMO @3M-TA3 has the best advice for you. What he named is what you should have prepared anyways in case of pandemic anyways.

 

Read up on N.B.C. training and gear! Make sure your chosen equipment is current, or at least capable of dealing with radiologics and work from that!

As of right now, NK isn' quite capable of fitting a payload to it' ICBMs and the have yet to succssfully test the guidance systems, but it' only a minor set back to their capabilities. Right now, they would have trouble hitting a State with what they have, but that level of randomness is enough for now to hold the U.S. at risk! Depending on how quickly they can test and tune, they could prolly get close to a city of their choosing within a year, after that, they would be on the same level as the rest of the nuke powers!

 

Lithium hydroxide will scrub out the CO2.
I think CaHO might work too.

Plus we don't even know if their nuclear weapons are weaponized.
The first hydrogen bomb the US tested in 1950 had to be super cooled with a refrigeration unit the size of a house.
It was a science experiment, not a weapon.

 

Great idea about living through fallout. Ashamed to say until I read your comment never even thought about that just initially surviving the blast. Will start research this weekend, thamks!
