Money is in the bank and a non-issue. Where would you be for your permanent getaway. Are you already established at that location, would you permanently move to your BOL, or would you move to your dream BOL? Where would that be (in general) and why would you choose that location?

For myself, I would go back to S. Central Montana where I grew up and have a chunk of back-country acreage with a house on the lake. ;) One road in and out, snowed in during the winter and plenty of fishing and hunting opportunities.

    How about you?

I've thought about this a lot recently , and have not been able to come up with my ideal location.
I did read something this morning were Trump released a lot of the land that Odumbo froze up to prevent natural resource retrieval and exploration , or building . Some has been sold for those purposes but a lot of it is still available for as low as a buck fifty an acre. Not sure if that's open to the public , but worth a look. At that price , sure could make that area seem close to ideal.

Yep, that's the other thing , 35 years ago , I still had the energy to prep the land the way I'd want it , now I'm not sure I've got the energy to build up raw land into my off grid ideal BOL. I got the heart , and part of the mind , just not the health or energy. :(

Still considering a move to warmer climes, but the plan for now is that the next move will be to underground via the furnace.

North to Montana or back East. Cannot decide between the two. Will be heading to Montana this winter to check things out. I figure going in the winter will be educational so I can see what the weather and area is like. Many people only check places out during the good weather months then dislike the winter. If I head East, I think Maine would be where I land.

Before you go to MT, let's discuss where you are going... there are many great areas. A lot of it depends on if you still have to go to town often or if you are looking for a getaway!!

At almost 80, it isn't where you would like to be, it is where you must be. Money, an ideal BOL, X years food and Y thousand rounds of ammo are all meaningless in the long run if you don't have your health and a support system that will be available in times of need. Friends, family, a good church, a doctor that you trust, trades people that you trust, a home that you can heat and get around in, someone that will show up before the, snow storm and help you start your generator, etc. One of our church families, with the parents in their early 30's, just had a new baby girl. The baby has some kind of birth defect and they had to do emergency surgery and remove part of her intestine and she will be in intensive care for a few days. They have 4 children and the husband works in construction and rents a place. After church last week, a group got together with the minister and decided they had enough problems on their plate and the hat was passed for this months rent, and people volunteered to baby sit the kids, arrange meals each day, make sure the propane tank for heat, cooking, hot water, was full, etc. Nothing special, that is what the church family does, it all goes around, the baby's grand mother among others showed up at our house after my wife had open heart surgery 5 years ago and made sure we had meals, laundry was done, everything I needed for work was there etc, , and wouldn't take a dime for it. They picked up a pick up load of wood from my wood pile, and loads from several other members wood piles yesterday to take to an elderly gentleman, actually he is 7 years younger than me, that is trying to live on limited means after the state and the nursing home took most of his life savings when his wife had dementia and of course after she passed, he lost her Social Security check, , he heats with wood and is to proud to ask for help and one of the church members noticed that with the extreme cold his wood shed was nearly empty.
At least before TSHTF and possibly after, being part of a caring group, at least in my case as an elder, is more important than preps or location or even money. Your situation might be different, but at my age , I am not about to move to the perfect BOL, in the in the wilds of Montana, with 20 years of supplies, and being a perfect stranger knowing no one and having no one giving a d*** if we live or die.

I am going to the Bozeman area. Bozeman is a small area but lots of open land around it. Also Yellowstone is near and lots of protected wildlife so if SHTF, there will be meat. I want to be away from town/people. I have been living near people and I do not like living near folks. I want my own well. I want a dirt road, trees and land.

I know what I want. I have my list of must have's. I have it in my head, just need to find it.

Maine is a harsh place. For one thing, if you haven't lived there at least 20 years, you are an outsider and are apt to be shunned (medium common in all the New England states based on offinon 30 years coming and going.) The weather, well, balmy it ain't, and the politics ain't too friendly most of the time. Gun laws were not too bad 20 years ago, dunno if it's still OK. I looked very closely to the China Lake area about 15 years ago.

My Mom's side of the family has been in Bozeman ever since the wagon broke down on their way to Oregon City at the end of the trail. I still have one of my three surviving uncles in Drummond. It's not the town I remember from my visits every summer in my youth. Property in the town itself is surprisingly expensive: A quick check shows my brother's old double wide on Broadway at well over $400K and my Grandmother's old house nearby on Lammie the same. Grandma's house was a converted garage of maybe 1,000 square feet with two bedrooms and a bath. I'd consider Livingston or Drummond as close by possibilities with more realistic price.

90% of Montana's liberals live there and in Missoula - each a college town. The saving grace is that it's still reasonably small and under the 50,000 limit where there is no anonymity for the trouble makers. Like @Yard Dart said - location, location, location!

Montana is a fantastic state with plenty of mountains, wide open spaces and outdoor recreation. There is a lot of potential there. I looked very hard at the Bitterroot valley south of Missoula. Plenty of arable land with fairly easy to defend choke points at either end, and the Bitterroot range is stunning.

I'm almost there, but would prefer to be between Charleston and Georgetown SC, 20 acres of wooded land, 800 square feet of home with 2000 square feet of garage, 5 miles from the ocean. Plenty to hunt, abundant fresh and salt water fishing, productive soil, and few people. Most importantly, mild winters and not too hot summers.

Were happy where were at in Co south and West of Divide. Stunning beauty all seasons, Crisp clear air, and very few people, and fewer strangers make this A.O. ideal. The winters are brutal, but once you experience a bad one and live to tell the tail. you got it made. Its also High Altitude, which many have problems with, so that keeps visitors very limited. Flying into and out of this A.O. is a challenge to those not experienced, so civilian aviation is going to be very limited.

If this were the case, I would just get the "Boss" to buy up all the land around us, say 5 kms in every direction. I'm happy where I am.

Same here...38 years ago. Way too much time/effort/money invested here to even think about 'bugging out'....plus at my age, not the energy to do it again. So this is the Alamo, for better or worse.

I am doing fine right here in north Idaho. But if I was ever to leave, it would be to go to somewhere in N.W. Montana.
