Some claims are made... if true... wow?

Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on Guns.com.

Wyoming-based gun maker Big Horn Armory brought some big guns to TriggrCon 2018 and didn’t disappoint. At the range, company rep Sam Kuntz showed off the AR500, an AR platform chambered for 500 Auto Max. And wow! That’s a whole lot of nastiness moving downrange quickly.

Kuntz said “this is the most powerful, widely available AR on the market today … out of this 18-inch barrel we’re able to put a 440 grain hard cast downrange at 2,200 feet per second, resulting in 4,500 foot pounds of energy.” He added the 500 Auto Max has the same load data, shelf life and power as a .500 S&W.

    Neat-o
Wonder why they didn't simply use the .500 S&W?

Semi rimmed cartridge, maybe? Tough to run in semi's.

If I had that, I'd want a hand gun to match .

For a .50 cal the can would cost more than the rifle, but what an awesome rig. I'd think that with a good brake or can (or both) recoil wouldn't be too bad. Range on the other hand might be a bit short or you could use it for indirect fire. I'd think the bc on those big bullets would be pretty low.

It would cost a fortune to shoot, that's for sure, so one would have to reload.

It would be interesting to see a genuine comparison in ballistic gel exactly what it's capabilities are .
Especially laid next to other relevant rounds .

    Brass is 250 $200, 500 $315 and 1K $540.

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

700 gr. Bullet. That would have to beat the crap out of an AR platform.

Eh, it's pretty awesome for home defense, hog hunting, anything close up. But, combat? Anything outside 200yds we're talking ballistic poop.

    balcalc_chart_1533947886.
And that's the closest I could make it since it's a handgun cartridge. Set with the 440gr. and 2,200fps, the drop will not be good... we're talking a terminal velocity with 859fps at 500 yds. This should speak volumes to accuracy, we can completely ignore the lethality part of the equation if the bullet isn't accurate. I can only guess and say a -200 inch drop at 500 yards is abysmal. But, you are looking at maybe 10 to 12 inch drop at 200 yards and an acceptable 1,343 velocity. Compare this with a Winchester .308 pushing 2,900 fps (just one bullet I use) :
    balcalc_chart_1533948334.
And the .308 is still hitting with more than 2,000 fps at 500 yards.

So, up close and personal, yes. Take that baby out of its element, and you're SOL.

Shelf life? That's a very strange criteria. I wasn't aware that any modern firearm cartridge had a shelf life concern. (Unless they're talking about the time from introduction to obsolecense.)

I'd look more at case availability. I've made semi-rimmed from rimless (7.62x28 Nagant from .223) and rimless from rimmed (.32 Remington from .30-30 Winchester) but none of it is easy or fun. Even assuming you could get a bunch of .500 S&W brass cheap,
and have a single bit ground to do the conversion in one cut, it's still a novelty cartridge.

Not a lot of potential for case conversions from rifle brass. Even the big belted magnums are a tad small in diameter, so you're back to something big and rimmed, like .348 Winchester, which isn't exactly common range pick-up brass.

.30 Giraffe Magnum. Why not just go with the.300 Giraffe Magnum. Rebated, belted, double-shouldered, and uses round projectiles that roll off-the-shelf. :)

  16. How about necking the .50 bmg to shoot a 6.5mm bullet. May have a problem with short barrel life. But what the heck we're dreamin' here.

    That's funny ,
you could shoot the 50 @2200fps and then pick up a 17 HMR @2550 and still hit the 50 in flight.
