It's that time of year again and I am off to the Bahamas for the next couple of months. The fort is ready for whatever with an adequate stock of essential supplies, plenty of food and water, an emergency generator on-line, sat-coms if the cable fails, IP telephones over the sat internet, and a large reserve of fuel and support just down the street at our warehouses and marine terminal. I have replaced the pump on my well this summer and installed a new septic system. The puppies have recently undergone a refresher course in whom to bite and when and the alarms system is peaked and tweaked. I installed a steel fire-door with dead-bolts on the master bath room to double as a safe room. I also installed a cell phone and charger, a pistol and ammunition, a shotgun, a taser, and a cs cannister inside one of the medicine cabinets. There is enough fish in the Koi pond to make several meals and the citrus crop is looking good. This year looks like a bumper crop of muscadine grapes. The freezer is full of shrimps already and the supply of canned garden is growing every day. My work schedule has recently changed to where I stay abroad a month and rotate home for two weeks and I am going to enjoy that. I might even find the time to restuff all the empty brass that has been accumolating for way too long; certainly have the powder and components to do it with. Now it is just a matter of seeing what mother nature brings.

Here's hoping for a mild hurricane season with no major hits and no loss of life Yikes.... we're about due for a direct hit out here in the middle of the pacific... last one was over 15 years ago... Iniki... Cat 5... right over Kauai.... keeping my fingers and toes crossed for clear sky and calm seas...
A pistol in the medicine cabinet.... now that's hardcore, man! Actually, I've thought about it myself. I figured the constant humidity from daily showers would quickly degrade both ammo and pistol.
Amen and . Sounds like you have all the bases covered. I really like the idea of the steel door with dead bolts. I am thinking about buying a couple (one downstairs and one up) for designation and implementation of safe rooms. I did pick up an extra safe for the downstairs safe room, and bought an extra case of water to put there also. Good thinking Sea, you are stirring the pink stuff that resides within my rather thick skull.
Well this is my first post, but I've been reading through the site for the better part of an hour now. Anyway, I've been stockpiling canned goods for the past three months, I have extra propane, etc. for both grills, and sterno stoves as backup, and have been trying to stockpile other items often forgotten such as toilet paper, etc. (we always have a good bit, but there was a shortage during Ivan, and we came close to running out. Not a good feeling, even for something that seems so mundane) I always have a good bit of water on hand, but if all else fails there is a creek running through our property, so I just keep some iodine tabs handy as well. I've been trying to think of all the things that hurt us to not have during Ivan, and I always feel like I am forgetting something. I always have plenty of spare ammo on hand for the 12, and have a little .32 revolver as well (not that it will do much, but it's better than nothing) I have a 73 caddy that runs, but not very well and it's tank is full of gas to use as a backup reserve to the other reserves as well as no less than half a tank of gas in the other two vehicles. I usually keep gas on hand in small containers as well, but the last storm we had where there were shortages we cut in to that really quickly trying to help people out, get to friends/family etc.
You might add paper plates and throw-away glasses. Saves on water use. Baby wipes are good for quick cleanup. Antibiotic salves or cream for keeping minor injuries from becoming major ones, benadryl for ant bites or bee stings, plain bleach for whatever dirty water brings in. Just a few ideas.
