Ever since it warmed up this year I was out collecting propane.
Between the agg auction and scrap yard I was able to get three 100lb cylinders going for an average price of about $60 each, found two 20lb tanks at the scrap yard and at a garage sale for less than $20 for both of them.
Then bought a scratched and dented 30 lb tank from tractor supply for $10 off.

Last winter all I had was two 40lb tanks and a 20lb tank and 2 of those round radiant camping heaters. I only used one heater at a time.
The only propane heater I added was when I scavenged the 30k btu per hour dual fuel propane and natural gas wall heater from my rental house.

I'm using the propane mostly as convince heating and for my wife so she doesn't have drag in firewood.

Next year I will probably try to put in a propane cooking range.

    How about you?

I'm collecting charcoal and storing it in air tight metal containers.
    Purchased a Hibachi [IMG]
and [IMG]Oval Fryer w Griddle lid.
Storage containers are China ammo Boxes.
With theses items and existing cooking items we can cook most anything including bread.
While in Japan I cooked in this way.
Charcoal is easy to make and cheap to purchase this time of year.
You might want to purchase or make one of these. Only news paper needed to start a fire and quick to use, no starter fluids needed.

We currently run one LPG tank, but for cooking only. No heating necessary here. I am in the market to buy two, maybe three 45 kg tanks.

Good post. I have a question for you folks. I'm Wanting to put in a drop in propane stove top. I can pick up a NG unit fairly cheap, but will a NG unit work with propane ? I've heard you'll need to change an orifice , but here's this . I had a plumber do some work for me on a job a few years ago , I needed him to swap out a Water Heater,,,,told him it was a gas unit. Later on , thinking about it , I confirmed that he knew it was propane. He said he had never known there was a difference in NG and Propane , said he's been installing NG units , WH , stoves , etc on propane for years and never had a call back. So , does anyone have experience in this area ??

I'm still not a big fan of Coleman propane stoves and lanterns, but their ease of use for others, who don't understand the finer points of liquid fuel pressure stoves and lanterns, they are great. What I'd really like to find is a manifold or even just a two hose splitter that could be run from a large gas grill bottle and be connected to two or more Coleman lanterns/stoves that have only the connection for 16 oz screw on cylinders. That would make setting up a hurricane kitchen a snap.

You might could find some parts to rig it up at Tracto Supply. Or their online store . They keep stuff for heatin chicken houses and coups .

That is correct. The heating value of propane is different from nat gas, and to keep the burners running right the gas admission needs to be controlled. I've forgotten which is the larger orifice, but chances are you are safe with the smaller one. Someone with a better memory than mine will have to help, I don't make too many mistakes in gas services, but this one could be hazardous.

I use propane in NH and the last two stoves I bought come set up for natural gas. Had propane company set up one, pressure regulator in stove is set up different and stove comes with a extra cost propane kit with different sized orifices for propane and he set it up per the book. Worked and was safe but was lousy to use. Had store plumber set up second, used his own orifices, set it up his way, and it ran great, had him reset first stove and it ran completely different. The BTU and fuel air ratio's are different. Don't know how it would work out if using an engine, but for stove, water heater, furnace, it makes a difference what fuel you are using and how they are set up. In my limited experience, there seems to be a little skill in getting it just right rather than safe only, and the companies seem to err on the side of safety. I collect the empty 20 lb grill tanks from the dump, take them to the propane exchange, and swap them for filled tanks, saves about $25 for a tank fee, and use the Coleman t-stand and regulator for my greenhouse and house with Colman style heaters and lights. A lot cheaper than using the throw away tanks and they last 10 to 15 times longer. Once I have a certified tank, I take it to the Tractor Supply and it is both filled fuller and the propane is less expensive. At moment have 8 20 pd tanks and 1 100 lb tank. Would give small cook surface and 1 light for several months.

Almost every gas range sold is sold setup to run natural gas.
There are conversation kits you you need to install.
Some stoves can use generic gas kits and some have to use a proprietary kit.

I have never found a tree that has support for multiple lanterns (top mount/screw on), but I own a 3-distribution point tree that I have run the lantern, a stove and a heater on all at the same time from a 20lb tank. Very similar to this one:

You do need additional hoses to get to the stove and/or other "side-mount" capable devices:

Apologies if that isn't what you were looking for.

Got about 8-20 pounders and two 100 lb tanks at the BOL. Got tired of swapping 20 lb tanks on the Travel Trailer, so bought a Stay-a-While kit and hooked up a 100 lb bottle with another in reserve. The 100 lb bottles last for a little over a year's worth of camping trips. When one is empty, I just hook up the reserve tank and haul the first one back to town when I go - get it refilled.

I found a 40lb tank at the scrap yard today, so it only cost $1.
But it needs an OPD so I can get it filled.
