Letter Re: Long Term Beer Storage
    Jim,
Great work on your “Rawles Gets You Ready” preparedness course! For folks wanting to keep beer in their long-term storage supply, the “blue” variety of Chimay (a dark ale made by Trappist monks in Belgium) will store nicely for upwards of 15 years. Even better, my local Costco (in Texas) sells the 750 ml bottles with corks. Regards, – MP

ANYBODY ever drink this..or keep it a long time

FROM ONE SITE speaking of a 2002 bottle in 2013
    "
Borderline worthless. I've been fortunate enough to try an awful lot of aged Chimay, and 11 years is just way too much on it.
3-5 years is the sweet spot, and after that it is likely going downhill.
Even beers that age well don't last forever.

That said I'm sure somebody would trade for it just for the opportunity to try an age-able beer that old, but don't expect the world for it. IMO just drink it yourself and enjoy the experiment..."

10 - Refermentation. After bottling, the ale is stored in a temperature-controlled room for three weeks until the bottle fermentation is complete. That is when the Chimay's maturation begins. Connoisseurs claim that its maturation can continue for years, but that's another story.

Agree with techsar on making own, a little hops and yeast put aside for beer, water, wheat or rice, etc all usable as food if not used for beer.

Aging beer is a crap shoot, even for Belgian styles. In Europe, beers were bottled and stored upright in caves where the temperatures remained stable and never warmer than 45°F (7°C) and never colder than 38°F (3°C). I've found that unpasteurized, sour beers, high alcohol 10%ABV and higher Stouts, Barleywines, and complex Belgians age best. Store beers upright whether corked or capped. As beers age, some flavor profiles drop out and other flavors develop.

All that said, I can brew a nice fresh beer in 16 days. 14 days for the Ale yeast to ferment the brew, 2 to 3 days to force carbonate. Stove top "Kits" can last and be viable for years if stored in a dry environment. A kit usually makes 5 gallons of fresh brewed beer and the investment in a "system" for brewing can be relatively small.

If things do go totally up, 10 or so years down the line a few tobacco seeds and some good beer and wine as well as the ability to distill might be a really good thing to have to trade. Or at least it has been for the last 5,000 years or so and all over the world.

I've tried several times to determine the shelf life of beer. Turns out it's about 3 days - less if you buy smaller quantities...

As stated above, get a kit and brew your own. Stored ingredients would last longer than the beer itself.
