Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) caused a firestorm on Friday when he suggested using nuclear weapons against American citizens who oppose his far-left gun control agenda, which includes forcing Americans to give up their semi-automatic weapons.

Swalwell made the comment in response to a May news article on his radical plan that was widely recirculated on Twitter on Friday in which he called for a $15 billion government program to confiscate millions of guns from Americans.

Swalwell responded to the tweet by writing: "And it would be a short war my friend. The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit. I’m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities."

“You don’t need AR-15s because the government isn’t tyrannical, and, anyway, if you try to stop us taking them we will nuke you” is my favorite of all the gun control talking points.

Swalwell later confirmed in a tweet to the NRA's Dana Loesch that he wants to confiscate all semi-automatic weapons:

Swalwell later argued that if a firearm contains a pistol grip then that somehow magically makes the weapon more powerful:

Fair question. Rifles. They’re more powerful and cause more carnage when used with a pistol-grip. See @ScottPelley @60Minutes piece. To reduce semi-auto pistol deaths I’d have universal background checks and mandatory reporting on mental health.

I understand the impulse of some to vilify Eric Swalwell, by associating him with some random 'assumed' nazi villain from Pinterest central casting...and for that reason, I'm calling Godwins Law Godwin's Law - RationalWiki on the use of that particular image. The reason Roberts Ancans was probably smiling was probably more the fact that he had survived both the Kholm Kholm Pocket - Wikipedia and Kurland Courland Pocket - Wikipedia pockets (albeit badly wounded) , and had been awarded the Knight's Cross for his courage, and leadership, in leading his infantry company in combat in the Kurland pocket.

Ancans fought in the Latvian Legion (19th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (2nd Latvian)) after Soviet Russia's first occupation of Latvia during WW2. He and others fought principally for the defence of their own country (Latvija) against the Russian communists. Although some volunteered, most were conscripted into the German war machine with varying degrees of reluctance.

His biography is interesting:

Ancans emigrated to the USA in the mid 1950's, worked as an engineering draftsman, and kept his nose clean according to intelligence reports, raising a family in his adopted country, the USA until he died in 1982 at the age of 62. Incidentally, Roberts Ancans was about 26 when that portrait was taken of him. In comparing Swalwell, with Ancans, Swalwell is being compared with a patriot, who had demonstrated considerable personal courage and leadership in time of war...a decidedly complimentary comparison if anything.

I would like to think this Rep. Eric Swalwell probably used the term 'nuke' in slang in that the government would drop upon the gun-holders like 10 tons of poop, utterly destroying them, and also to get exactly the type of publicity and response he got - exactly. But, if not, then it shows his true uncompromising, authoritarian mindset...

Reference the photo of the Nazi officer... Much of the SS got a bad wrap and were dealt with totally unfairly. The photo shows this guy was the real deal by deeds not by words, a patriot, a Combat Infantry Badge and Iron Cross 1st class and 2nd. The Soviet Union invaded his country and he joined those that gave him the best chance to defend since the weak-kneed Allies wouldn't say 'Boo!' to the USSR, not even when they invaded Poland with Hitler. But, they couldn't let Hitler's new social and economic reforms spread. Oh, no! Better to give USSR half of Europe than allow that...sometimes history sickens me, especially when they lie to you from childhood about it. I am glad this man lived and got to America as I am sure he was as much an American patriot as he was an Latvian patriot and, without a doubt, he was a warrior.
