Nope. Most of those are unused, just rusty..at least from what I saw just pulling some out and looking at them. I sharpen drills by hand with a drill point gage or protractor.

My question to you would be, Do you know how to sharpen the Crosscut Saw, and "Set" the Teeth? It is almost a "Lost Art" these days....

Sharpening cutting tools comes with my trade...though we don't cut much wood. I have not yet sharpened one of these though. That saw is probably useless to me in all honesty. The perforated lance tooth pattern that it has apparently doesn't hold up well in hardwoods. We shall see. Here's a reference or two for anyone interested: http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment...cations/fs_publications/pdf/pdf77712508lo.pdf

One of those has prints for setting tools and a jointer, IIRC.

Dad's got a few tools around for sharpening and setting the teeth/rakers, probably owned by my great grandfather for use on his saws. Got to find the right files though.

I learned the Skill from an Old Maine Logger, that moved his family and SawMill to Alaska, back in the 50's... Actually won a 4th of July CrossCut Saw Contest, here, back in 77... Had the Cannery First Macinest, on the other end of the Saw... We spent the night before, with a set of Files, and the Setting Tool, getting our saw ready...

I'm going to learn, that's for sure. :) I will ask around here locally, but I have my doubts that I'll find anyone competent. My uncle might know, I know he has mentioned watching my grandfather sharpen them. Speaking of which, there are a couple of other saws out in the shop that I think have either plain teeth or the M tooth pattern. I haven't gotten them out for a good look. They're bucking saws(straight back) about 5.5 to 6 foot long. One has the original handles on it. Not sure if they are some dad acquired or they were my great grandfathers....I know dad moved a couple of others to his shed.

Back to the topic: I mentioned that I bought a Mule UTV. We couldn't get it the other day because the yard was about to close. Dad went to get it today. Needs the carb cleaned, but I had it running in less than 45 minutes. The winch works too. Sorry about the crappy pic, it started raining and I was in a hurry.

There's a couple books from the Forest service on cross cut saws.. Tryed to upload them to the resources and failed but will try again as soon as I get some power here.. Waiting on parts that I thought I had on hand..

I'm not real crazy about the winch mount, but it's nothing I can't fix with some scrap steel and a welder. I'll keep the A frame in mind, but I'd be unlikely to use it. Most of the places I have cut wood, I can drag a trailer right up to it, or hook a chain on it and drag it somewhere more convenient with a tractor or a truck.

I linked the USFS books above.

The way the economy is going, it is good to bump this thread. Prepping on the Cheap is a good thing. I used to get many things from yard sales but I noticed this year that there were not as many. I do not think people want to put the effort into selling their stuff anymore. I have learned about Facebook Marketplace. It is like Craig's List. My son has sold quite a few things on the Market Place site.

I get as much as I can second hand.
My vast propane tank arsonal, almost all of them are used. Hell even the ones that I bought new were scratch and dent tanks I bought at a discount.

My nissan leaf, 7 years old, has an almost new traction battery, still lost nearly 85% of its MSRP.

The entire town next to me across the river has a week long yard sale event every year. The only issue up here is poor weather, and there have been many days of rain spoiling the yard sales events. When we have good weather, there are yard sales practically everywhere. But, there aren't really many wealthy neighborhoods here, either. Maybe that's your problem.

Be very careful about your accumulation , this is what my dad left me and this is but a fraction of his collection seriously .
Being his son I have accumulated his skill and more for finding value in all this stuff, however being disorganized adds insult to injury.
I desperately beg of you my friends provide a structure and organization so that it does not spill over out side in the elements and rust and become a source of complaint from neighbors and passers by .
