Marauders at TEOTWATKI Your Opinion to a Perhaps a Partial Hypothetical

I asked my brother in law today if one would be safe from the casual marauder party going door to door to every residential and Business Building during TEOTWAWKI if you settled into the 25th floor near the roof of a High Rise Building where the power was turned off either by you or because there is no electricity. He said if they can't detect any sign of life that high in the building they in all likelihood won't bother to walk up that high. Do you agree? This question is partially hypothetical because I don't know if you can have Solar Panels on the Roof hidden. Also assume that you have water/food supplies for at least 6 months.

Nope, they are going to pillage each room all the way to the top.
If they meet suborn resistance, they'll just burn the building down.
And the dweller at the top will come down with the building, being either alive but dying from being buried or succumbing to smoke inhalation. But dead nonetheless.

Seriously, an apartment building is a huge target. potentially years worth of supplies for a raiding party in a really small foot print, easily controlled as there are what 40 'homes' per floor and 25 floors? What's that 1k homes .. how many miles would one have to walk to investigate that many tract homes?

Where are honey bees going to go if they want to conserve energy? to the yard that's covered with clover or the field that has one lone flower.

Yep, high rise = dead quick enough.

and the idea of a casual marauding party is inaccurate. in a world WROL, only those that fight or are not where the people are … are going to stand a chance.

the 25th floor near the roof of a High Rise Building after TEOTWAWKI aint gonna be safe, the buildin will burn down sooner or l8r [ either accidentally or intentionally ] and there will be no electricity to pump the water to the 25th floor to fight the fire anyhow

like @VisuTrac said they are likely to burn the whole buildin down

Going UP is always the absolute DUMBEST Idea, Period... Once you run out of UP, YOU ARE CORNERED.. and then DEAD... Hard to pull off a Maneuver if you can’t go up, and they are coming up behind you... Maneuver is the only way you escape..

Any kind of Shelter in a city is going to be a target for all sorts of activities! Unless you can effectively defend your hideout, your a sitting duck, maybe not at first, but as soon as the band of marauders encounter a known quantity of resistance, they will quickly overwhelm you and kill you, then take what ever you were defending! Ether your really good and fire and maneuver and know how to take and hold ground, your simply screwing your self if you are trying to stay in place!

Interesting comments which somewhat puzzle me. To clarify the question, said building is not necessarily an apartment building but just as likely an office building. I admit I may be a lot less realistic than the people who are posting here but I just can't imagine marauders walking up 25 flights of stairs on a regular routine scavenging visit when there are plenty of 2 story buildings to pilfer, As to burning down buildings for what purpose will that achieve? I admit my views may be totally naive and wrong compared to the majority here. I'm also assuming people are weak from their ordeal and not in the mindset to climb 25 stories.

IF a building is even suspected of housing any one or any thing of value, it WILL be searched, with violence if needed, and if your squatting in said building, your number is up! It's get your stuff and get out before your removed in pieces!

25th floor may buy time until they find you, but find you they will. They might even take up living on the 24th as they pillage the lower floors. What's more, the longer you hesitate getting out of dodge, the less chance there is that you'll make it.

Ed, slowly but surely, your preparations and circumstances are being revealed, and your risk is getting higher, to the point that you'll rise to the top of the predator's list. You need to stop creating scenarios in the hope that someone will tell you that you will be fine and survive.

anybody bother to inform you that the top floors - both residential and office - are premium/VIP real estate >>>> if raiders didn't know to hit the top floors when they began their looting spree - they most likely will discover it sooner or later ...

  14. UncleMorgan

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

The raiders won't just run up 25 flights of stairs and start banging on doors. They'll be much more methodical. They'll lock down each building and clear it one floor at a time, consolidating the loot and selecting their slaves as they go. They'll send everything back to their stronghold as theyclean out each apartment in turn with military precision.

Captives that can't be put to work or used for entertainment will be killed out of hand.

As each building is picked clean, they'll move on to the next. They'll loot office buildings as well as gated communities and apartments, because they will leave no loose ends behind them. No potential adversaries, and no unharvested resources.

Even office building are loaded with prime goodies like nice clean paper--by the ton. You can't carve a sheet of paper out of a stick, and administration always requires written communication and record-keeping.

The dominant raiders will have leadership, and their leaders will not be stupid. . There won't be any random raiding allowed on their turf. They'll kill off or absorb all the competition, then farm their territory for all it's worth. They'll pillage while the pillaging is good, then put their slaves to work on their brand-new plantations so their own good times will never have to end.

Like it or not, the raiders will be the nucleus of the next civilization, and the only choices will be beat them or join them.

Having seen this very thing in person in the Balkans, I can tell you, every potential source for food and any thing of value WILL be fully explored, often more then once by several groups! Women folk will be raped and pillaged, men folk tortured and or killed for sport or just the hell of it, and EVERY stone will be kicked over to see whats under! Buildings are a focused source of potential, and ALL are fair game! Any resistance will be met by overwhelming force as its seen as valuable enough to defend, it's valuable enough to take! Start thinking like a predator, stop thinking like prey! Get steely eyed, put on your war face, and get to work on a viable plan to GTFOOT!

Buildings are death traps. typically what, 3 - 4 ways to get out on the main floor plus maybe underground parking and if the building is low enough, exit from the roof?
Raiders are going to know exactly how you are going to get out.
You won't know where even half of them are on the outside. Try and take a peek out of the window, you'll probably catch a projectile moving at high speed.

There aren't going to be any rules. You've got stuff, they want stuff, you are going to at least lose your stuff. Probably more unless you capitulate early before the raiders start suffering causalities. Once the raiders get worked up, all bets are off. Probably everyone is going to die in that building but the women are going to suffer first.

You are talking Without Rule Of Law. and if you aren't fighting like the third monkey on the ramp to Noah's ark when the rain starts .. You are going to be like the unicorns that were frolicking in the field. Dead and forgotten.

If I were to be in the city when SHTF shows up. I'd be donating what I couldn't carry to my neighbors, trading if for say a car, bike or kayak to get as far from the city critters as I could as fast as I could.

It's going to turn into a killing field and I don't want to be there when the masses turn ugly. And it will most guaranteed, turn ugly. If they can't have your stuff, they make sure you don't have your stuff either. There is no living in the cities only dying unless you are the one running the show or doing the bidding of them that is running the show, but that might also be considered dying because you are no longer free.

1000% Disagree with you. I daily create scenarios so if they ever come up, even in a slight variance of the form, I know how to deal with them. Almost all professional and college football Head Coaches create scenarios. So do law enforcement and most businesses. I find it hilarious that many of the people here don't try to think of possibilities and what to do if they ever come up. My best example are the Big Brave People posting who say they're going to use force on people when they deem it necessary without considering the legal and financial consequences of doing said act. Now I'm not saying using force is wrong but they do not seem to consider the real world consequences. Obviously if its the end of the world and Law Enforcement doesn't exist, that's a whole different ball game. I've changed my original thoughts of what I would do in certain situations because of posts of different people here which give a different viewpoint from people in my daily life. I find it ironic that some people here who live in rural, out of the way places, seem to totally dismiss viewpoints of professional people who live in a City. They don't seem to grasp that people who survive in the City know how to survive in the City.

Ed, that was a very Obtuse reply, several of us here DO have real world experience in dealing with these types of situations, and If I were caught out in a building when SHTF and the rule of law ends in that instant, there is only ONE choice, fight your way out, and run away as fast as you can before you catch a bullet!
I get it, your stuck in that fancy high rise, sucks but if that's what you got, then you need to take a real world no shit look at the total situation and come to Jesus with the realities, basically it's this: If you plan to stay, then you plan to die! If you plan to wait, you plan to die, if you plan to run, you will die tired, if you plan to fight, you will die in pain and alone in a puddle of your own making! That's the hard reality of your situation and no matter how you plan the situ out, that's the cold hard truth, YOU ARE GOING TO DIE, Make peace with it!
If I were in that situ, I would be as far away from that place as I could before things go south, I would have my shit stashed in a safe accessible location, and I would be armed to the teeth and moving only at night!
