Don't forget spare parts, armorer's tools, lubricants, cleaning supplies, ammunition (at least twice what you think you will need and then double that), and reloading equipment/supplies. One small part or spring can turn a rifle into a club. These things will be more than worth their weight in gold, so will your ability to keep friendlies going.

Standardize as much as possible to keep it as simple as possible. Gain your armorers skills NOW and make sure you have your reloading recipes down as well. Do it without electricity...

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Agree - after any type of die off there will be several firearms per person.

Heck. I already have several firearms for each family member: Grandpa said, way, WAY back when, to ensure a long gun and a hand gun for each family member and potential neighborhood reinforcements that might move in. But still looking for more redundancy. I'm thinking that very long term the trusty .22LR will be the most useful. So iI obviously need more than my current 40k rounds....

Same same including family members who don't think they will need/want a gun. I standardize on AR-15 in 5.56, AR308 in 7.62, and S&W M&P in 9mm. All rifles have the same battery of arms as do the pistols. They also share common magazines and parts. Doesn't mean everything I own falls into those categories, just that this is what I prep for myself and others.

Might not be a bad idea to have some 22 kits for the AR-15's, but also have rifles and pistols in 22LR as well

Interesting choices: I also standardized on 5.56, .308, and 9mm. although some .380 for summertime carry when it's too bleeding hot for a cover garment. I too make sure all the various systems have as much in common, parts and drill wise as possible. The .22 AR kits I have do not seem solid enough to use except for practice or backup purposes. So I've converted a few 80% ARs to .22 permanently by re-barreling and adding dedicated BCG assemblies. These seem very solid so far, although I'm trying figure how to double stack rim fire......

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

I'm a fan of .357 Magnum as a convenient round for both rifle and pistol.

I also think that .22 is useful all out of proportion to it's size, in every version.

While it's cheap, effective, and dramatic to snipe with a Mosin-Nagant, I think popping an enemy soldier in the head with a .22LR would probably do the job a little more discreetly, and well enough.

Especially if you packed those cute little hollow-points full of an obnoxious substance. Say, something conventionally banned in Geneva.

But then--(sigh!)--I do admit my sense of humor tends toward the dark. But that's why my children were always so well-behaved.

I simply told them what bratwursts were made of.

Not to mention that the .22 LR may be effectively suppressed with a 2 liter soda bottle...
It is also quite interesting to research wound channel paths for a headshot with a .22 vs center-fire - the larger round drills a relative straight hole with a wound channel effectively twice the diameter of the round. Very serious damage, but occasionally survivable: esp by vacuum headed politicians. That nasty little .22 however tends to ricochet off the interior of the skull like a hamster in a cage. Such behavior damages more important structures than the larger round simply due to the additional regions of the brain it interacts with.

problem with your thought process >>>> you fail to realize the HUGE firearms & ammo shortage immediately after the SHTF hits - a good majority of the firearms in the US are concentrated in a very small minority of the population - same same with ammo >>> go down the average street of average Urban USA and you would be lucky to find 25% of the homes have any kind of firearm - start analyzing and you find mostly a hodge podge of sporting guns and little of any ammo - Grandpa's old double barrel and a part box of some target loads ...
you start using that limited armory and the numbers get worse - there would have to be a tremendous die off before there would EVER be anything like an abundance of firearms ...
and I'm talking strictly the USA - 100s of times worse where firearms ownership is restricted & rare ....

Something in a common caliber and something that you can shoot well.
Having some spare parts and a bit of gunsmithing knowledge could be useful as well.

One other thing to keep in mind , is that no matter what gun you have...if you ain't willing to use it...then it becomes useless.

What? No light machine gun or grenade launcher? I'm going to imagine most folks already have these and more except for those that just started opening their eyes. I can't imagine them being able to hit a squirrel with a .22, let alone defend themselves against armed and determined miscreants. My advice would be to buy any weapon, even air-soft and start learning how to shoot, gun safety, respect for lethal capability and learning realistic expectations. I'll also guess this is the principal crop from which is grown most of the arm-chair commandoes that keep shooting up schools, work places, and shopping malls.

I will not interfere with the general tone of this thread, because it has some relative value. That said, you should be less interested in what YOU plan to have handy post SHTF than what your tribe has in common. Commonality will be a prime requirement for tribal survival. You might do a search on "tribe" on the site, there is a lot of info left from the early days that will help the thought process. Unless, of course, your plan include solo survival.

    Happy researching.

A Battle Rifle makes little sense as the FIRST Weapon, needed prior to SHTF.... I would put it near the bottom of the list... My list goes as follows:

    1. .22LR Winchester 69A. (Acquired on my 12th Birthday)
    2. Large caliber Hunting Rifle. Winchester M1894 Carbine in 30/30 (Acquired on my 20th Birthday)
    3. Shotgun Browning A5 12Ga. (Acquired soon after I married, age 24)
    4. SemiAuto Pistol. 1903 Colt Pocket Pistol 38ACP (Acquired after 1st Child born)
    5. DPMS AR10 .308 Winchester. (Acquired when long range shooting, possibility, became evident)

Reasoning: First firearm, that was a basic teaching and learning weapon... M1894 First large Caliber firearm was purchased when I left College and moved to the wilderness, for two years. Ammunition could be purchased in any General Store, anywhere... First Shotgun. Browning A5 received as a gift from my Godfather, when I married..... First Pistol. Traded a 10# Box of Cherries & a Watermelon for it, from a friend who told me, “A married Man needs a Good reliable Pistol”..... DPMS AR10 purchased just a few years back, when I realized that holding off any Opposition, is better at 1000yds, than 100ft...

I picked up other firearms in between the above, but these were the first in each of the specified categories listed by the OP... and I still own each of the above firearms, along with many of weapons that upgraded the “Go to” weapon in each of the categories...

Your input is very well received and respected. The experiences you have shared living the things the rest of us fear have definitely shaped my plans and thoughts. It's time to re-read your posts yet again.

I would have standardized on the Glock since it has the most aftermarket support. I chose S&W M&P because it's the one Mrs 3M could use the best and in particular was the easiest charging handgun we could find. My choices were based (after reliability) on usage by women, young adults, and the elderly and since my plans are based on a group wanted to standardize.
