Howdy folks. this website certainly has grown.
I saw this thread at TB2K and thought it would be an interesting topic.
What were you folks doing for the big Y2K non event??

I homestead on a small 3.5 acre parcel here in SE Ohio so prepping and self sufficiency is part of the every day routine/mindset. with gardens, canning, hunting, buying bulk, firewood, etc. etc...so the Y2K thing was just one more thing to deal with.
The evening of Y2K my DW and I watched the time roll over in the eastern parts of the world and decided that the S wasn't going to hit the fan tonight. Had a shot of Yukon Jack with a glass of homebrew, put the 1911 and AK away and went to bed.

Nice forum here, I hope I can add something benefical to it.

Thought Y2K was a bunch of hokey crap, so went to bed at 2200 and woke up at 0600 and I was still alive. Computer was still sitting there on my desk just as I left it the night before.

    Welcome brewer. Happy New Year.

As for Y2K, all of the software I had written for the prior 10 to 12 yrs had a 4 digit date code so I knew my systems were okay but there was a lot of money made by programmers during the 2 proceeding years fixing mainframe S/W. I have friends who secured their retirement years from that work.

.....I remember New Years back in the year 2000. At exactly midnight, my sister and I stepped out in the yard. It was about twenty degrees. A dude goes runnning down the middle of the street- shoeless and shirtless; screaming obscenities at the top of his lungs. After he passed us; he stopped to roll around frantically in the intersection; screaming and bubbering all the while. Ater he rolled around in the dirt and gravel for a few moments; he leapt to his feet; and proceeded sprinting on down the street; making a noise like an air raid siren.

.....I looked at my sister and said, "Obviously NOT Y2K Compliant."

.....So say what you will. There WAS Something to all that Y2K Bullshit!

I figured it was just a money grab, so we stored about a week's worth of food. I watched the ball drop and about an hour prior to the drop I lit the fireplace just in case. That food was used up and we had no further interest in prepping at the time. Only started back over the past couple months.

I was really doing nothing just like this year the only difference this year was I wasn't hoping for a hell to break out like I was 8 years ago.

Yeah I can relate to the 8 years ago or 8 hrs. ago memory wise thing...
Thanks for the response, I was already set up for any problems that could happen, either short term or long term.
Now my focus is food production with all the raised garden beds and the new greenhouse this year.
2008 is going to be all about energy(gas prices) and food..how much are you spending for that grocery cart full of "stuff"??
I've made many small steps to improve the garden and it still all comes down to "people gotta eat".
Good Luck and I hope the very best for you folks in 2008

Welcome brewer, old friend I've never had the pleasure to meet FTF !

For the rest of ya'll, brewer is an long time homesteader with a lot of knowledge.

I'd been prepping for about 15 years before Y2K.....though that period, I got way more focused and intense. Haven't let up much since.

Wife and I were going thru some "goals" lists I'd made in the late 80's just this morning and reflecting on what we'd accomplished, what remained to be done, and what had simply been abandoned as "no longer interested in that".

Focus this year is my solar energy project, improvements to the garden, and firewood storage.....I have a good start on a 2nd year's worth and would like to complete that along with a 3rd year's worth.

HEY ANDY! Good to see you bouncing around on the survival websites.
Once again I want to thank you for the heads up so many years ago to get some silver and gold bullion. It has tripled in value and of course the ol' ass wipe FRN has gone down down down.
Hope that corn you planted this season dried and is ready for some grinding and a batch of cornmeal muffins.
Take care my friend and I hope you have a good 2008

Well from what my nephew who is a computer tech for a large banking chain told me Y2K would have been a serious problem if businesses had ignored it but when they realized how much money they would lose they hopped on it .

The worst I feared would actually happen since it came at the beginning of a month would be all the welfare checks to the minorities wouldn't show up and we would be looking at riots galore .

We all know how incompetent the government is so this was the most likely scenario to me .

Corn is dry, brewer.......I shelled some the other day with that little CS Bell sheller I bought.....that thing is SOOOO cool.....little hand held deal that clamps on a bench ( or whatever ) and you feed an ear at a time into it....shelled corn drops into a bucket underneath and when the empty cob is done, it backs it up and spits it out a chute on the side......I love playing with it......I figure several bushels an hour easy with it.....I'd like to make a short YouTube video of it.....wifey got her a new digital camera with short video ability.....so maybe I'll get one up shortly.

Then we made some fresh ground corn meal and turned it into cornbread.....sweet !

Glad you got on the PM bandwagon......the best is yet to come I think.....

I wasn't prepping for anything 8 yrs ago (other than home defense). But honestly, I called bullshit on the y2k scare from it's inception.

I was just 'on the floor' in Programmerland here, so all the gruntwork for Y2K had been done - in the closing months of 1999, I was involved in some final testing and documentation. I'm still my team's "Documentation Nazi", so I learned well!
I had just gotten on the fringes of Prepping, so had a couple months of food and about a month of water saved back. Had gas for the stove and heat then, so wasn't too worried.
I didn't expect anything major to happen, and it didn't. Biggest "Non-event" in human history. BUT - the FLDOE paid some Y2K contractors big bucks.

The company I work for, spent millions protecting against Y2K. It was money well spent, because it would have cost us 100's of millions if we hadn't. We still had a few problems, but nothing we couldn't handle.

We had to fix some date problems at the small company I worked at. Y2K could have been trouble, but it's hard to guess how bad because we worked on it at least 3 years beforehand.

The date we had trouble with wasn't even the roll-over between '99 and '00... it was 2/29/00.

The only thing I remember was a kiss with a neighbor lady that lasted a little bit too long. DW is still mad.

Hi Brewer, glad to see you here, Know you from GIM, but I go by different name/names there. Also live in south central Ohio not far from the first capital city.

Y2K, every one I knew checked in with me on what they should be doing for the event. Not because I was advertising, just because they knew if anyone would be ready it would be My wife and I. I just usually told them to stock up on food like they would for any other coming winter storm and not to buy anything they didn't normally eat or use. We miscalculated only on one thing, we bought too much rice, I think we still have some of it left from then.

Now for some reason, I'm getting the feeling I should go buy a couple big bags of rice again. Maybe it's that feeling Andy talked about in a thread he started on that other board.

Y2K was real funny at work, at 11PM my shift ended, I clocked out and went home to watch it all happening on TV. My bosses were all at work that evening waiting for the sky to to fall. I laughed about that all the way home. I sure bet they felt foolish the next day when they finally got up out of bed from having to stay up half the night.

I didn't really get all cought up in the Y2K fever and thought it was mostly a joke. I was hanging out with some friends and spent the night online (in a chat room) listening to people freak out or watching them trying to scare the sheeple.
