Electric bikes, often referred to as e-bikes, have become increasingly popular in recent years due to their eco-friendly and efficient nature. Let's discuss various aspects of electric bikes in this thread. Feel free to ask questions, share your experiences, or seek advice on e-bikes.

A few years ago, my brother first took his Towny and added a rear 1200 watt motor/wheel having done his research seeing the plusses and minuses of other forms of motorizing a bike.
Then he did his wife's bike and later did mine.
Over time I found I wanted more power for climbing hills so I put a 1500 watt front wheel motor, making a giant difference in both climbing hills and traversing soft dirt and sand.
He found that though center motors did have good climbing, the gearing was a high wear item, front wheel only had a tendency to wear out the tires prematurely often breaking traction taking off.
Though we kept our caliper brake system, seeing the hill climbing capability I'd like both caliper and disk for better stopping power especially on the longer hills. I tow a trailer as well so with added weight I need better stopping power. I am working on brakes for it as well. I may have to go electric.
The bike is handy for shopping trips to town and excursions in the woods.
If I can find the material, I'd like to make a better trailer frame of aluminum.

I think a Mad Max e-bike would be super cool...

A steampunk e-bike would also be pretty awesome....

I was too polite to make that indelicate suggestion. ;)

I hope that my contribution to the topic of e-bikes was at least interesting (I have no financial connection with any of the e-bike manufacturers and sales enterprises featured in my earlier post).

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

At a glance, I didn't see a way to buy the bikes in the reviews linked to.

It's been a rough week. I might have missed the pitch in the link provided.

It is not clear that the Electric Bike Web site is an e-bike vendor itself, given that the e-bikes featured can be purchased by various vendors, including Amazon. However, it is also not clear what the relationship is between it and the e-bike manufacturers / vendors of the featured bikes.

I think a discussion that explores the benefits (or otherwise) of e-bikes in general, would be worthwhile, a discussion of useful e-bike hacks, handy ancillary gear, and so forth rather than marketing blurbs on specific e-bikes.on what seems to be a marketing website.

Yeah, I would actually be interested in hearing more about e-bikes. I found @arleigh input to be extremely informative as now I know at least "1500 watt front wheel motor" is a necessity and "center motors did have good climbing, the gearing was a high wear." I think an e-Bike could be handy but since I would be using it on rough foot trails/paths, I'm not sure it would be practical.

I’ve been told by the man that built mine that batteries do not like freezing cold so it’s time that I bring the battery in.

There are new batteries being developed as we speak that are far better than Li, if your willing to wait.

What happens when your ebike battery self destructs while you're in an elevator with it? You look like Anakin Skywalker on Mustaf.

I bpught a brand called Hovsco. I bought in prepping toward if no gasoline is available then the ebike could charge by solar. Decent bike, horrible business model from the company. I use mine to knock around in the woods with and on my property. I like it well enough i would get another. Just different company.

If I was in the market pfor an E-bike, and I'm not, I'd take a drive to Ohio and talk to the Amish. I saw bunches of them riding the same basic black model. Many with the same square panniers. I suspected these were for extra batteries that extended their range. I found it interesting that the Amish keep pedaling at all times while riding. Whether this was force of habit or something they do for the tourists, as a bicyclist, I wasn't fooled. There was just no way a school girl was pedaling up a grade like those in rural Ohio that effortlessly at 25 MPH.

I'll stick with my 21 speed old fashioned pedal bikes. Wow! I remember when ten speeds was a big improvement over three, and now all my bikes have 3x7 gear sets. I'm in no hurry to get anywhere. I can enjoy the passing scenery, and have time to greet neighbors as I ride past. I've got enough gear ratios that I never have to get off and push the bike up a hill, but I'm not loaded down with everything I own nowadays. Even if I had to get off and walk the bike up a hill I don't think any kind of power assist would ever cross my mind. I'm just not there yet.
