Yeah, Ford was building an EV assembly facility near me. When it was announce, land and home prices skyrocketed overnight. Now that they are a couple of years into the building process, they've done several "revamps" to the original plan for the site. Originally it was for building the EV truck (lightning?) and one EV car and was supposed to produce so many thousands per year of each. Then they pulled back on production quota. I think the latest is that the EV production is reduced to about 1/3 original estimates and now they'll be assembling some gas burners there as well.
I guess on the bright side there is a "buc-ees" getting built near me. I stopped by one and was not impressed with it or the food. Oh well. I'm waiting for Ford to scrap the building all together and get out of the area, then watch land prices drop.

the key to ev, solar and wind tech is battery's/storage. i think they have quashed battery tech and are slowly trickling it out. once we solve/get that problem the stuff will work.

If they standardized on interchangeable replaceable battery packs that could be swapped out by robots at a 'Service Station'
Pull up to the Pump, car aligns with the mechanism, Robot pulls out the discharged battery, replaces it with a fresh one in under say 10 minutes and these service stations are in every town and all down the highways.
Until then, yeah, Internal Combustion engines are going to be the rule in the hinterlands. And I'm ok with that. No one on the camp road has more than 60 amp service anyway. Ok, John does. But he's got a huge MFing diesel power plant that can run his operation and all of his neighbors compounds as well.

Elon just announced hydrogen cars and the industry is already tooling up.
The new hydrogen engine is a generator, much like a freight train only it's not a rotating machine.
They found a frequency that breaks the water molecule apart at any rate they wish and the engine driving it does not need a crank shaft . "I think" not too much information was given away but this will disrupt the whole economy.

EV cars are great in a narrow band of operation.
Not too cold in the winter, Not too hot in the summer. Say 40F to 95F. Outside that window battery performance and range degrade quickly.
Gasoline motors .. not so much. -20F to 120F+ really aren't much of an issue.

Where electricity prices are lower or subsidized for home charging.
I don't think that 2 cents per mile is quite right. Last time I did the calculation it was more like 5-6 cents with 13c/KW and home charging. And this is just the 'fuel cost' and it might be higher at one of those charging stations.
My tacoma cost is just under 18 cents per mile, my Prado is the same if I use 87 octane and stay under 70mph on the freeway.
Taking the Prado offroad and running premium .. well, that bumps up to 45 cents per mile (but I'm smiling the whole time)

The EV killer is depreciation and maintenance over an extended period of say .. 10 years.
A 2016 Model X cost around 110K in mid trim new
A 2016 Tacoma cost around 35k in mid trim new.

    Depreciation:
Tacoma with 130k miles selling price 22-25k (lost 10-13k)
Model X with 130k miles selling price 18k (lost 92k)

Maintenance cost to 100k miles after warranty
    Tacoma total 3900
    • 22 oil changes at home 50$ each or 1100 dollars
    • 1 steering rack 400 dollars
    • 2 sets of seat jackers to modify seating position 200 dollars
    • 2 sets of replacement tires $900 for 4 tires.
    • 2 transmission fluid spill and fills at 75 each
    • 1 replacement battery 250 dollars
    Model X 10750
    • 5 sets of replacement tires $2000+ for 4 tires
    • 3 replacement 12V batteries at 250 dollars each.
and here's the kicker, if you didn't get the drive battery replaced under warranty .. well, you are looking at about 15K being drained from your checking account.

So true costs (not including insurance and plates):
    (fuel cost + depreciation + maintenance) / 130k miles
    Tacoma
    (23010+10000+3900)/130000 = 28.4 cents per mile.
    Model X
    (7800+92000+10750)/130000 = 85.0 cents per mile.
and if you needed to replace the main battery on your dime you are looking at 96.6 cents per mile.

Electric cars are great if you are independently wealthy and can right off the vehicle as a business expense. Otherwise owning them is going to kill you due to depreciation and maintenance cost almost immediately. Hybrids are the best of both worlds but I still prefer my 100 percent dinofueled ride.

Meanwhile what is the depreciation on my 2009 Subaru with 220,000 miles. I have replaced head gasket and timing belts, rest is routine stuff, tires, battery, brakes, as in all cars. Neighbor got rid of his electric at 100,000 because the battery was still good and he could sell it. Cost him 2 grand to get power to garage for charger when he bought it. Probably twice that now.

Let's say it was a 09 Forester. New price 20k. Price with 220k on the clock, selling price now is like 4k, you burned about 24k worth of fuel and probably have 5k in repairs
    so
(fuel+dep+maint)/ miles is about 20 cents per mile to drive that car into the ground.

How much do you pay for electricity and/or solar panels, inverters, batteries?
How much does your insurance cost?
    How much is your depreciation?

How much EV services are you able to perform yourself?

How common are power shortages or outages?
How common are natural conditions/disasters affecting EV performance?

How much do EV and solar subsidies cost?
What is the cost of many companies & dealers losing money by producing & stocking EVs that no one wants?

What is the cost of basically relying on China or a pro-Chinese cartel for everything?
What is the long-term cost to the planet of the toxic unrecyclable materials used in EVs?

I said less than $8,000 for my leaf in 2018.
I charge it at night, probably takes a few hours I don't know, doesn't really matter for me.
Electricity base rate here is 8 cents a kWh.
I got solar panels strictly as a "fuck you" to the power company. That's it.
The leaf is the cheapest of my vehicles to insure, so if you're trying to claim they cost more that's dead on arrival for me. All but one vehicle is older and has more miles than the leaf and cost more to insure further more the leaf is the only one that has free towing and rental car coverage out of all of them.
Last time I checked I can sell my car for about what I bought it for, not bad considering I've been driving it for 7 years and put over a hundred thousand miles on it.
The range is about 60 miles in the winter, more in the summer.
The electricity rarely goes out, but I don't charge during thunderstorms.
There were no public chargers here of any kind here till about 2023 the plan all along was to not need them.
I've never waited to use a charger, I rarely see anyone else using them.
I don't know how much a battery costs, probably a lot. I'll probably hit a deer before the battery needs to be replaced, if it does last long enough to need a battery I'll sell it to some sucker. Either way not my problem.
There's been exactly 1 leaf battery charging fire out of hundreds of thousands of them, no fires due to crashes, running over shit dropped in the road.
EV, solar subsidies and how much EVs cost companies is not my problem
