A lot are supplimented by high fructose corn syrup. Against the law? Yes. Do inspectors have time to mess with massive Honey producers? No. Overseas standards? None.

 

I was moving some of my food preps from the barn to the house (summer temps are much cooler in the house) and checked on the condition of the food. One plastic tote full of Ramen Noodles had a funny smell...the plastic bags were breaking down and had imparted an unpleasant taste and smell to the noodles. They were dated 2009, so they had to go, still I got my money's worth. I'll replace them and be good to go for another 15 years or more. So, check your preps regularly, don't just stick them in the garage, basement, or barn to go bad without you knowing it.

Cleaning out the garage and found some old food, like 10–12-year-old food. The canned veggies had a best by date of 2015 and just had a little surface rust on the cans. They had been stored in a Rubbermaid Tough One plastic tote. I opened a few cans before I chucked'em, and everything looked and smelled good enough to eat, but they had to go. I'm not as bad as ED from L.A., but even I gotta draw the line somewhere.
Another Rubbermaid tub held 2-25 lbs. bags of yellow corn meal and 2-10 lbs. bags of dried beans. The beans are in the original plastic bags and appear fine (no bugs, softness, sprouts, etc.) I opened one bag of corn meal expecting to see bugs, mold, clumps, etc., but again it was fine. I kept the bags of beans and the unopened bag of corn meal, both had best by date 2012-2013.

 

Almost forgot, I also found a can of Crisco shorting and opened it expecting the worse, but to my surprise it was white as the driven snow, and it was 10-12 years past the expiration date. So, food will go bad, but it takes a lonnnng time.

 

I stumbled onto a YT video from Morgan Hill Farms where the lady was talking about a food production shortfall this year claiming we had 6 weeks to prepare before price hikes hit. Does anyone here know anything on this subject?

I've found a few bad cans of goods in the last few months. That rotation would sure help a lot. Had some noodles ,, and some of them packets of Soup starter seasonings on a back shelf ,, found some mouse turds and ripped open bags ,,, freeking mouse has probably gained some weight by now ,, I'm starting to wonder if that groundhog I seen in the back yard ,, was actually my freeking mouse problem .
So I've been checking dates , and rotating, and replenishing my canned goods . Bought some clear plastic storage bins for my bagged and packaged goods .Soup starters , Hamburger helper boxes,, Mac and cheeses boxes ,, a few of them chewed into.
I knew I needed to do this rotation thing ,, just kept putting it off .

 

Mice will chew right through plastic. You need metal tins. Don't ask how I know.

 

I have heard that online. Farms around here in Iowa look to be doing ok.

I used what zIU starred and portioned it so I did not compromise th whole.

 

Always be sure to place rodent poison around ANY stored food, because they can go anywhere and get into anything. Use bait traps if there are pets or small children around. Rats and mice will go for the freely available poison before gnawing through a plastic container, especially if you wash any trace of food smells away with a 50/50 bleach/water mixture.

 

Farms around here are doing great. The wheat is in the silos, the corn has made a good crop, cotton is doing well, pastures and hayfields are green. If we can get a couple of more good rains, at the right times, the soybean crop will be good as well. That YT video might be just doom and gloom.
On a related note, I cleaned out a spare bedroom that is right off of the kitchen, put up a shelving unit, and am stocking it with about $500 worth of canned goods. It's just stuff that we eat and buy regularly. No MREs, no freeze-dried foods, no buckets of 25-year food, just food that we will go through a couple of times before the end of the year. I still have the MREs, freeze-dried foods and 25-year buckets elsewhere.

Yummy, Tree rat! "Prince Of The Treetops"! And Bunnies too. Both are some fine eating! Pan fried or cooked in brown grave. Oh, man, it's got me drooling.

 

I see the powers that be using a supposed famine or food shortage to scare and control the population. I also don’t put it past them to try and restrict the consumption of meat for “the good of the planet”.
