Morning all, I heard an ad on Coast to Coast last night that mentioned a website for DIY long term food preps. I wanted to take a look and see if it had any DIY freeze drying info. Did anyone catch the site? I thought it was something like US survival food, or American survival food, but neither are valid sites. I couldn't find it through a search engine either. Anyone? Thanks in advance.
Re: Looking for a website mentioned on Coast to Coast last n For long term DIY food preps, the best to learn is through your nearest LDS cannery, as for freeze drying of foods, this is a complex operation involving expensive vacuum chambers, DIY food preps that you can do in your own kitchen is canning and drying. Building a root cellear is also at the top of long term food preps.
Re: Looking for a website mentioned on Coast to Coast last n I have not had any luck speaking to the local cannery's to me. They don't want anyone using them that is not a LDS member. But i'm in a high density area.
Re: Looking for a website mentioned on Coast to Coast last n There are a lot of good books and info on the internet that can get you on the right track to canning and drying of perishable foods for long term storage, http://www.homecanning.com/ is one the best sites for canning, and this site for dryinghttp://www.uga.edu/nchfp/how/dry.html. There are certain safety percautions that have to be followed to prevent food poisoning, but this does not require an advanced education to carryout. Canning/drying has been done for a long time before modern refridgeration and what we now call grocery(junk food) stores came into being.
Re: Looking for a website mentioned on Coast to Coast last n Good info here. I was specifically looking for info on Freeze Drying though. We can and dehydrate now, but I love to tinker and make machines. I thought I'd look into freeze drying. If I made a setup, it would all be junk yard parts. I'm too cheap to do it expensively. Thanks.
Re: Looking for a website mentioned on Coast to Coast last n Would you like to network with me on this I am up to the same, have a vac pump.
Re: Looking for a website mentioned on Coast to Coast last n Sure. If you are already getting parts, you are well ahead of me. Do you have plans? So far, I've done nothing more than look up the rough process. I was totally clueless until about a week ago. Feel free to PM me.
