Well. I reversed it and came and toured Amurka in '93. Camped nearly all the way. Took 13 months and something like 70,000 miles on a HD Superglide.
    Best year of my life.
    Scariest too !!

I have traveled and worked Central America, South America, the entire Caribbean and a few places that I don't like to mention. The outer islands of Honduras are my favorites, and the crappy end of Hispaniola is my least favorite. Dominica is the most beautiful place I've been and Port au Prince is the ugliest. Belize was nice but their gun laws suck, as do most of Central America's. Mexico is more like a continent than a country and can change completely in a few hours driving. Most important? Understanding the finer points of la morbida.

Brainwashed dolt [booze]or not, did the Caribbean and South America on a military ID. Since then, have seen South East Asia a couple 'er five (lost count) times and a couple trips to Europe. (And my passport, third renewal, does NOT have a chip in it.)

By the hairy by, "por fah-vor" is Spanish, speaking of most 'Merkuns. But you knew that. [beat] I'll spare you my not the best nearly fluent French.

Let's just say I had a hell of a good time, most of the time, outside CONUS. Porto Rico excepted, that was not quite such a nice trip. All suitable for campfire tales rather than here.

Well,.... Some of "us", are NOT allowed to have passports. You see, some of us are held captive in their own country! I cannot go, allowed to travel, outside the continental boundaries of the U.S. And no, I am NOT a felon, convicted or otherwise! Sux huh!??? Bill

I have lived in Egypt. It was great, friendly people, cheap prices, lots to see. It was surely different. Believe it or not, it took me longer to get used to being back in the states than it did to get used to living over there.

I have lived all over the world also. And while I don't condone the dolt comment, I do have to say that there is a world of difference in living and working among the population rather than living on a military base and having little interaction with the "real" world. I had relatives in different branches of the military stationed in Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm, while I was living there and working for an oil company. The world they lived in and the impressions they took away from there were another universe compared to the world I was in.
That said, I have lived in Dharan, Saudi Arabia, Manila, Phillipine Islands, and Cairo Egypt. I have visited or passed through, England, France, Holland, Germany, Mexico, Oman, Bharain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar.
Of all those places, the one I miss, and would move back to if the oppurtunity arose, is Cairo, Egypt. Loved it there, actually I lived in New Maadi. Would still be there if we had of gotten our contract renewed.

For me, several trips south of the border (Mexico), mostly tourist traps, but some off the map trips, too. I have a good friend who lives in Monterey, MX and we e-mail regularly. Seems the border towns have gone from bad to worse in the last few years, more or less a running battle between the military and drug lords. Thankfully, he's a couple hours south of that, but still, too close for comfort.

I've done a fair share of European travels, mostly England, but also France, Belgium, West Germany (1985) Czechloslovochia (sp?) (also 1985), Holland, Austria, and Italy. Italy, away from Rome and Milan is amazing. I'd love to find a way to retire in Bergamo. It's the right balance of old world Europe and a modern city to me. I'd also like to explore Spain in the next few years. I might be heading over next summer for the Tour de France (to watch) and then touring the Alps and south of Spain.

Got my passport in case I needed it for work or whatever but generaly tend to be more of a home body and find enouph close to home to explore. My only real travels outside US boarders has been a few trips to Canada and other than a day trip to go swimming at a lake not to far from my aunt in North Dakota those trips have been passing through the populated areas and into the wilderness where there werent any people to enteract with other than those you went with. Gotta say did love those trips and getting into areas unspoiled....

Typically, VERY FEW ex-military are "brainwashed dolts" - a figment of an Uberlib's overactive imagination.

We sailed the Med and IO, and visited Israel, Kenya, The Maldives - all without having to kill anybody. Just a bunch of easy-going tourists. I did about three years of "paid Carribean Vacations", again without incident - just enjoying the travel and cultures. Saw this nation from coast to coast, on Uncle's dime. The US Navy is great for young folks who wan to travel.

I still have no passport, and don't need one. "Been there, done that!"
Once I retire, I may get the travel bug again - who knows....?

Hey Minuteman, I lived in Giza. I always heard there were a lot of American ex-pats in Maadi, I guess it was at least a little true. I never made it to Maadi.

Cairo is special, I think once you go there it claims a little piece of your soul and you are always left trying to get it back.

Wa alikum salaam wa ramatullahi wa barakatu. Bikhair, al hamdulilahi rabil alameen. Na'am, anna tetakalim arabiyah.

This would be easier if we could use the Arabic alphabet. Hopefully I was phonetic enough to be understood.

    Ma salaama, jazak allah khyrun.
