Unplugging your car.

My mom’s car goes bong, ding, clunk and clack. Light turn on and will not turn off, doors lock by them selves and the driver’s window rolls down by its self.
This got me to thinking, postSHTF do you want your car to have a mind of its own? How are you going to run blacked out with your brake light flashing on and off? How quickly can you get out when your car is trying to lock you in? How are you going to sneak up on some one when your car is turning on lights an going Bong, bong, bong?
Maybe now would be a good time to find out what you cane unplug.

My first impression is who's gonna be selling gasoline when it becomes necessary to sneak down the road blacked-out? I am of the opinion that the automobile will be one of the first personal luxuries to go the way of the dinosaur. Ever notice how entire families get around on mo-peds in third world countries? There is a reason for that and the events that would lead to needing to sneak around would probably be to steal gas to drive the damned car. I think I would rather eat than drive.
I got an interesting article today about thousands of boats being abandoned because people needed food on the table more than marina slip rental; this is a definite harbinger. We have become conditioned to believing that an automobile is essential to ones survival; just ain't so and even those that have put away enough fuel to last a little while will eventually be mad-maxing it.

This is a test this is only a test.

Think fast Seacowboys, you are on your way from point A to point B and you decide to spend the night in a cheep motel. You hear something so you get up and look out the grimy window of your room and see a mob coming down the street flipping over cars and burning every thing in sight.
    What do you do?

Think ohno the [shtf]there is no more gas the only thing I can do is stand here and die.

    Or

Grab your bag off the bed, toss your room key on the floor, get in your vehicle and [gone]to safety.

My little '91 Toyota Tercel is pretty mute - but I am currently fighting the problem of the brake lights staying on all the time. It's the switch above the brake pedal - but darned hard to get to! I may just dike it out and use a manual 'brake light switch' til I can get to it. It's a pain having to the unplug the battery when I get somewhere, to keep it from draining.

I once had an old '71 Dodge Polara modified with all lights switched in the cockpit - I could 'run dark' at will without tell-tale brake lights giving me away. But those 'racy days' are behind me!

I will NOT have a car festooned with bell, buzzers, bloopers and voices. I want my car STOOPID. [ROFL]

Me, too. EXCEPT that I really want to be reminded that I left the headlights on.

Okay jet away in that bad dream. That one time; but you wouldn't be in that situation (first lesson: Stay outta' cheap hotels),and "No more gas" removes the option of driving A-B.

( there'll probably be a headlight relay (you could pull) under the hood but it won't do all the lights at once). best to pull individual fuses. Perhaps if you think this is a problem you could put a black electrical tape pull tab on the appropriate fuses and just jerk them out if deemed necessary.)

Because going "A-B" is going to get alot more local and a whole lot less frequent in a "power down society"...

I very much agree the automobile gets entirely too much attention (priority) in our society. fuhgheddaboutit...(screw cars. That's half of the reason we are in this economic mess ).Or you'll be risking your life for "fuel" for your vehicle. To go where?

Are these being seized and liquidated by the marina? Sail boat would be a nice "live in; get out of dodge vehicle" and somebody's gotta pickup cbms from (iirc) vancouver island... [sinking] biglaff
