Commanding Officer, U. S. Naval Hospital, Camp Lejeune, NC On the evening of October 13, 2021 I witnessed a disturbing lack of respect from personnel at the Naval Hospital during evening colors. I was standing directly below the Emergency Room exit to their smoking area. The people there took zero notice of evening colors and continued their conversations during the entire event. I've been retired for more than twenty years, but I never imagined that respect shown during a colors ceremony could fall this far. I've attended the funerals of too many friends whose coffins were draped with our flag to let this disrespectful display pass. I informed the sailors on duty and was assured that they'd look into it. I also spoke to the Color Guard who confirmed that they could hear the conversations, which continued throughout the event. They'd obviously made an effort to look sharp in their uniforms and had performed their duties flawlessly and with utmost respect as they retired the colors. It's a shame that such a beautiful ceremony was soiled by ignorant (I can only hope) or willfully disrespectful personnel in the Emergency Room smoking area. Some education and policing is clearly needed to prevent this from ever happening again. I look forward to retiring again soon and will make it a point to attend evening colors on base as often as possible. A beautiful evening ceremony that shouldn't leave old men wondering what had happened to the respect that the event had once been shown.
