I want to know what you guys would put into a main pack , not a simple BOB. But a unknown destination teotwawki pack that you have 3 months to prepare. At first you have to just leave and leave fast. Then you can choose your plan of action. And take into consideration that you have no idea what is going on anyplace or if you BOS are still there or if the team you have are dead or not.Its just you and the bag you have and whats in it.Please ,give life saving suggestions as if it was your own son or anyone you loved who has survived and is all alone.Consider cold heat rain food water and best way to keep this stuff and get more. And staying away from cities.

I have no plans of packing for such a trip. I keep BOBs at each domicile and in each vehicle. I could manage for a week or more out of my BOB and reach alternate supplies.

Thats what I would call a LTC (Long term Camping) Pack. That'll need to be filled with the same things as you would put in for a 2-3 week backpacking trip. Plus a rifle, and an extra pair of boots.

Good for thought but I agree with Sea, keep a BOB in vehicles or with you as you travel but my plans are not to spend more than 3 days away from my home.

That being said, I live in an area where unless it is a natural disaster that takes out my house I'm not too worried about having to bug out for more than a few days.

If you are thinking of having to bug out and never come back you may want to look at another area to have a bug out location.

The weight of such a pack will kill you before you get to any BUG out location, and that is just a one person pack.

I check the following link when I have such a complex question http://www.bob-oracle.com/

I live in between the Alps and Munich and would need 2 long term BOB's due to the winter cold weather, snow and -°C temps, clothing and shelter building and the summer +/- 30°C. The get a hand cart or wagon to lug it all about bit is no joke, and to get the best out of being mobile a bicycle and have that fitted with panniers for even more survival stuff.

As to gun's and ammo, most country's regulate that stuff, so you'll have to adapt, air pistol or rifle for squirrels and rabbits stuff for trapping, then a bow or cross bow for deer. I have shot squirrel's with a Co² air pistol,

Knifes, a minimum of three, machete, utility and a very sharp scalpel.

Then there is the survival savvy, knowledge of how to get water in an arid area etc etc. Go out and practice what you have read, and test equipment that you have bought for a survival situation, all of the wire saws that I have bought in the past have always been a POS., get a folding sandvik one.

The thought of bugging out on foot makes me despair, that's why I plan on bugging in.

I know some things about it, not everything, and if I have to survive for a long term period, only time will tell if I did the right prepping.

I must have misstated my question so let me try again.I also have differant BOB in pretty much all directions but Im talking about have the big blast or something that makes it where you have to keep moving and the direction you are moving no matter which has been drastically altered.Like the house your back ups were in is now gone(scorched earth)all are dead or dying and you have nothing except the pack on your back.Dogs make good pullers of drag beds that you can put stuff on too,bye the way. This is the question. If you were in no way assured of any type of resupply and had no place that you knew was secure and were completly in the hands of fat what the hell would you want in your bag.And Ill make it easy, just 10 items. They issue shovels during war for a reason so I would have 1 shovel to make my new house, under ground. Now your turn what would be at least 1 thing you would have.

As generic as you are trying to be, you are asking a very specialized question. You are going to have to sit down and figure out what it is that you want. Use the basic survival needs, starting with shelter, then water, then fire, then food. You mention that you want a shovel, then take a shovel, but how much food are you willing to give up for that shovel. As someone else stated earlier, you fill a pack with what you think you want, you will break your back before you get out the door and your wife will kill you outright if you try to load her up like a pack mule. I recently did away with my heavy packs as they were unmanageable now that my knees and back are going bad. This question is really up to what you think you need. When you get that pack loaded, go take a nice little walk with it and then pare it down until you can hadle it.

I’ll bite – clothing (winter/summer/boots), cordage, blades, variety of fire starters, pots/pans, cutlery, first aid, .22 rifle, as much .22 ammo as you can carry, binoculars, tarps, survival blankets, wool blanket, personal hygiene items, vitamins, water filtration, sunglasses, water storage devices, wire, as many tools as you can carry – hatchet/axe, shovel and saw for sure, variety of nails, tinfoil, sewing supplies, food, pencils, chalk, cooking oil, small stove, sleeping bag, diamond stone, bucket, TP, any meds you might be on or extra glasses,

Think stuff that you can’t make yourself or find a natural substitute – razor, needles, collapsible jug, etc.

Also, I say first aid, but that’s pretty comprehensive – I have a small kit 9*9*3 that has – band aids, sutures, dental floss, water purifications tabs, lighter, scalpel, single-edge razors, razor knives, antibiotics, pain pills, ibuprofen, aspirin, antibiotics – pills and cream, alcohol - spray and pads, iodine, gauze pads, instant cold, instructions, needles, non-diarrheal, mole skin, super glue, etc.

Ditto for personal hygiene - toothbrush, paste, soap, razor, towel, etc.

Walden3 you have hit it.Now as far as weight goes I already have alot of time with heavy packs(100lbs)on the appalachian trail and off shoot trails going up and down those hills.Ive been doing that most of my life.I asked this question to see if anyone would add anything new that I either have not used or have used and threw it in the bush and went back for it a few months later.I am hopeing that some of you who have speant time in the bush either with military of any service or just for fun will help me to narrow down the things I have.I have a pack that has less than 60lbs in it and iy has 30 days food fire starters of differant kinds a remington 22 and about 1000rds light but very warm clothes sleeping bag thats gortex and is also a tent type and a few other essentials. So with this pack I can live for 30 mdays alone before I have to hunt. And yes I have water storage collapsable and filter with replacement element and purification tabs and a medical kit like the one mentioned by walden. But I have a problem.I want to increase the pack and also carry a bigger rifle and in this are the rangers actually do have M4's in there cars and I dont want to get shot.I have friends who have land I could gradually increase my ability to carry on but I want this to be just me and nobodies buisness. And yes I understand that Im telling you but I dont think Ill ever see any of you or even if I did I look way to normal for you to think Im wanting to train for bugout.Anyway any help and info on field expedient items,,that you have seen to be needed in most all situations. And we already covered guns.

Now this sound's like it could be interesting, what does your daily menu consist of, and how many calories does it give you per day, and are you full after you have eaten your meals?

I have spent time in the bush with the military and just for shits and giggles as a civilian, hiked in the German & Austrian Alp's with climbing thrown in, but that was with a very extensive support set up provided by the military.

just look at any remote peoples still living around the world today..or old pic's or film of tribes across the world.look how they live...most live fairly light.the farther norht you are the more goodies you have to have because of the cold.just my opinion but most folks cant carry any weight very far and for very long..this includes me.i have in the past but not now...3 discs gone with more deteriateing....lol...my pack will.would be 20 pounds...side arm...and maybe a 22 rifle.KISS....keep it simple stupid...is the best motto for buming around the woods.i have spent a great deal of time in remote locations and it didnt take me long to figure out, lighter is far better.it makes movement better and you are less tired and this helps to add to the enjoyment(for me) of living simple and free.i lived this way for about 8 years.after all that time the one knife i wouldnt leave home without is a small fillet knife and sharpener.it served me well over the years from cleaning fish, deer and garden produce to foraged goods to even my main kitchen knife while i was living my dream and being poor at the same time....lol.its all about how you feel and what you want or are comfortable with in a remote location or bugout situation.plus the better you can deal with not having something the better you can survive overall. make do,over come and thrive.just my opinion.

If you have ever backpacked for any length of time, You'll realize you can't possibly carry enough food for 1 for more than maybe a week. I have Kifaru Navigator and love it for 3-5 day trips but even MH packs get to taking up too much room

I tried so many times to "pack" a decently equipped BOB.
In the end, I have a 'loaded' vest, a pistol belt, and several bags...
Each bag has it's own virtues, but unfortunately they are all heavy.
I am considering a framed and wheeled unit.
Similar to what is designed to carry game animals.
Now, that brings up more problems....
Tire tracks, tires that can go flat or break, how to carry it, if you cross a river or stream, and the added weight.
I have internal frame backpacks, external frame backpacks, and not one of them seem to help solve the problems of being able to carry what you want to have.
Maybe there is just too many items that "WE" all want, but may not need.
I'm "old School", if you need it and don't have it.........!
Better to have it and NOT need it! ???
    An enigma.

    "---but may not need."

That is one reason we are here, to help sort out the must have from the nice to have in different situations. There are no hard and fast rule that apply to all people and all cases, beyond water and meds. I've compiled my own list of must haves, and thinking it thru carefully, 75% gets left behind as truly not needed if walking out is the only solution.

What I have decided to do (now that I've got my remote location, 30 miles from Wally World) is to put up a shelf with everything that might be wanted, going far beyond the must haves. Then I can select and bag what I must have plus goodies, depending on the situation. For example, I might leave a book behind in favor of an extra mag of 223 or 45 pills.

The ideal solution would be sort of a tactical wheel-barrow/rickshaw with twin mounted .22 gatling guns. You could haul a battery bank in this and recharge them with your bike and carry a television, a blender, ice-maker, and a electric combination grinder/coffee maker.
