i picked up a FR200 crank shortwave radio two weeks ago any ideas about how i would protect this radio against a possible EMP ? and would the crank/batteries still be good after an EMP ? even if the electronics were fried
any ideas about how i would protect this radio against a possible EMP ? Keep it in a faraday cage; that is, shielded. Note that if it is in use, it cannot be in a shielded enclosure because the shield will prevent radio waves from reaching the antenna. and would the crank/batteries still be good after an EMP ? Probably, depending on how they are constructed. I'm assuming that it is a conventional coil/magnet setup rather than something more recently developed. If the electronics are fried in such a fashion that the batteries were not shorted out, the batts should still be usable. If there are other caveats, or if I've blundered above, someone sort us out.
someone from another forum came up with the idea of using an old microwave for possible EMP protection microwaves are designed to keep microwaves in-unit would an old microwave keep an EMP out ?
I would think so. But it would be less about the acutal design and more about it being a big metal box that is usually grounded via the plug.
I've been keeping my back up radio's and computer in metal boxes(ammo Cans) and a wire to my cold water pipe. EMP is a much sharper pulse profile compared to lighting so I hope that a full metal surround will work I had orginally wrapped every thing in heavy duty alum foil I may go back and do that anyway.
