Flakey Thread Title

OK flakes, as in Potato Flakes.

Yeah you can grow potatoes, maybe... but not right away.
So I was bored and did a search for potato flakes, I remember growing up Mom would only serve Ore-Ida brand flakes, in fact I was in my mid thirties when I learned you could make mashed potatoes out of real potatoes...

So you can buy bulk potato flakes, 40# single bag or multiple bags, I would expect that you would repackage them in Mylar and O2A ... but are flakes all created equal.

I'm confused you can buy them in #10 cans (41 servings), or cases of #10 cans (246 servings), or a 6 gallon pail (324 servings), or real bulk in a sack/bag of 40# which is 864 servings...

Are all brands created equal? I only listed a few that jumped out at me...

Anybody have any experience with Flakes, and I don't mean the ones at work.

I buy Idahoan "Real Potato" flakes at Sams Club. They've gone up a bit in price over the last year but for instant taters these are the best I've found and WAY cheaper than buying the #10 cans. This is a 3. something pound box, 65 servings. I just dump it in a mylar bag.

My father-in-law HATES instant mashed potatoes, or so he claims, but I served these one T-giving and didn't say a word. He got thirds.

Edit: Stored appropriately, potatoes last for quite a long time. Making home made dehydrated potato does require some time, effort and resources, but the product lends itself to convenient portability when included in trail food menus.

using the same techniques with pumpkin, and sweet potato, (and other root crops) may also be worth experimenting with.

 

@azrancher All I can say is I purchased a 40 pound bag at WinCo and they are very tasty. I had previously purchased a box of Idahoan and both taste the same, very good taste. I mylar them up and there they sit.
