Yes. I'm working on mine. I'm a service tech, and could be anywhere when the truck breaks down, or something goes sideways. Having some basic supplies to make you more comfortable while waiting for the tow truck, or hiking for a phone, or gas in a pouring rain, just makes sense. If something more serious, happens, and you need fire, or an ace wrap, or cut yourself, a basic first aid kit makes sense. Food and water also make sense, because you will need them if you have far to go.
Think of what you would need for a weekend backpacking/camping weekend, keep it light, but pack what you would not want to do without.( A roll of toilet paper would be a must for me)
My kit is different than what you might want. I have a backpacker's hammock, some food, water, a small propane heater, poncho, hat gloves, and several methods of fire making, among other things, that would keep me quite comfy in the back of my work truck for several days, if needed, or cover my needs if I had to walk out.
Think about what it would take you to walk home, and plan accordingly.

Welcome to the forum once again. Not sure how much you have poked around the forum, but there are a lot of various threads that provide a wealth of information related to your question. Here is just one that would be recommended to read:

I plan mine as if it's just a natural quirk that lands me down a ravine with a broken cell phone in the middle of nowhere. How far you want to pull the scenario string is up to you.

My GHB is not scenario specific but has things I think I'd need in a worst case, 3-4 day scenario on my own.

That is the ticket to me. This bag(hopefully) will only be called upon to do what the name entails, getting one home. That in mind, its hard to make it too mission specific. In this case a "shotgun" effect is good I think. Basic things that a person will need no matter what the event to enable/help them get to their home.

Think unexpected primitive camping trip in January. That's what I'm loaded for. In the summer, I pull the wool blankets out.

The wife and I put together a "stay in place box" that sits in a corner of her office. After talking about this a long time we both came to the conclusion that there may be a time when it would be better for her to bunker in place so to speak. First, she is a nursing supervisor at a medical facility and may not be able to get out right away. Many times during hurricanes or ice storms medical personnel have to stay because relief can't get there. So we bought a tote and put together a kit that was larger than her BOB, but she can still handle by herself. One of the doctors (like minded, and I'm helping him get squared away) asked if he could stash one of his own with hers.

Exactly Kellory. That as her husband is my biggest fear as far as this topic goes.

instead of carry-on luggage... check your local pawn shops for an old golf bag "push cart".. already designed for off road... can carry a load and hs a handle tall enough to save your back... just a thought...

    YMMV

40 miles is 12-15 hours walk. Easy in 24 if you're in stealth mode sneaking around.
Plan your route. Roads are congested, railway is better.
You need a couple energy bars, 2 litres of water, hooded poncho, zippo lighter, a knife or multitool and if legal a gun.
Fits in a hip pouch...cept the water.
Vac sealed solar blanket wouldnt hurt...
CB Radio that will reach home or close would be an asset.
    That's the minimalist.

what they said ^^^^ lol there is a wealth of knowledge and you couldn't possibly plan for every scenario, remember to keep it LIGHT enough to be manageable. get home bag and a bug out bag are two different bags. A get home bag needs to be light but have the essentials to get you through. Maps, compass, wool socks, full tang knife(preference to me) water filtration, energy bars and first aid. Some type of firearm. Fire(3ways), safety glasses, gloves(i like mechanix) and a good pair of shoes or boots. this is just a start. but don't over do it.

While you might b able to walk a flat 3 mile pace.. I would plan on 15 miles a day... especially if you haven't walked the route before. additionally you may need to stop and wait for different reasons... plan for 3-4 days to return and hope for less... just my thoughts...

    YMMV
