Survival kit for travel

I have a few basic survival kits (need to buy a few good large backpacks yet), get home bag, etc...but when I travel, I do not seem to take this stuff with me. I want to get a small but decent amount of items together for air travel or when I am away from my vehicle (where my GHB is).

I am taking a hanging toiletry kit and adding items to this. Since it has zippered pouches, that helps for certain things.

I would love to have ideas on this...
I will include my (so far) list.

    ANTIHISTIMINE/DECONGESTANT

    ISRAELI BANDAGE (4”)

    KNIFE

    BURN GEL

    ANTI-ITCH

    BUG SPRAY

    ALOE VERA

    LIP BALM

    TRAVEL SPORKS

    550 CORDAGE

    FLASHLIGHT

    READING GLASSES

    TRIPLE ANTIBIOTIC CREAM

    HONEY PACKETS

    CLOTHESPINS

    WRAP BANDAGE IBUPROFEN/ACETO

    LIFESTRAW

    TISSUE PACKETS

    EMPTY ZIPLOCS

    SEWING KIT WITH SAFETY PINS

    SPACE BLANKET

    MULTI-TOOL

    FISHING LINE/HOOKS/

    MATCHES/LIGHTER

    COMPASS

    WHISTLE

    FIRESTARTER

    TOILET PAPER

    LIGHTSTICK

    Sutures/hemostats

At first it looked more like a comfort kit than a survival kit. Some lidocaine and hypodermics to use with the sutures would make the experience more pleasant. I carry an out of service cell phone which can make calls to 911 and has a camera.

I am trying to get something that is not necessarily for survival, but something for emergencies on vacation...well somewhat for survival.... I cannot possibly carry all of the crap I have in on vacation! I have a camera/phone. Just making an extra bag to take, say on a plane, to another state or country... ideas on that???

You seem to have the basics covered, but I'd concentrate on solid survival items in case the plane go's down or you get stranded somewhere. Extra cash is good. And the 911 fone is back up. Can you be SURE your battery will last during an emergency? Mine is a tiny JAX from Virgin Mobile and have spare batteries for it which I can change out blindfolded and one handed. More extensive fire making is standard in all my kits, even the micro kit made for a friend had matches, spark device and tiny but powerful magnifying lens. Concentrated food like tablets will increase your range, along with one a day vitamins. Think of your project as mini PSK/GHB. Because that's what you need to do: Live and get home. If I can be of any help I'd be happy to do so.

I have extra battery supply and a solar charger for a phone. More info would be great. New here so...try to get me started on this site please! I am only a year into this but just starting on this project. Also thinking of possibly moving to Mexico someday. How the hell to figure out what to get and need there? No decent water, so that is the first obvious one.

Introduce me to how this forum works. I will go from there...thx.

Kelly, this site is like a library. A good place to start is to decide what you want to learn about today, and do a search from the box in the upper right corner. Or, you can just prowl the forum and see what gets your attention. I'd suggest "back to basics" as a good entry point. Sometimes, the search function works well, sometimes it'll give you junk. Sometimes, using google will bring you onto this site with better accuracy than the search function. (They know us out there ---)

Im new here myself so I'm still learning my way around. The people are friendly and helpful here, just ask questions, that's what I do. Took me awhile to learn how to start a thread so you're doing better than I am lol. Survival kits are a hobby and passion of mine. I even belong to an online group where we compete in making them. One thing i'd do is consider makin g your kit in a fanny pack rather than a toiletry bag. Not enough pockets to organize but will free up your hands and might draw less attention in an urban environment.

I like this site a lot better than the last site. Less tension and you can speak freely here. I would enjoy seeing more thread on actual survival, however.

Welcome to the Monkey Kelly Marie!! I would suggest if you are using this as an air travel type kit to stay away from the items that may be TSA prohibitive such as a knife and gear more towards first aid, water purification, and most of the items on your list. If for some reason your plane went down, what would you need to provide food-shelter-first aid and clean water.... that is a start to the logic in preparing a kit within the air travel arena... I saw nothing in your list such as energy bars or other food type items that may be of benefit... and are wrapped and store well. You could use the wrapper for first aid in a pinch... dual purpose items are essential for a compact kit.

Start a thread my friend and we will gladly participate in it... even if it is just a question. And if you have not used the search function as of yet...partake and you may find what you are searching for. There is a ton of material here in survival, you just have to search...and ye shall find.

And I know one case where they used a power bar wrapper to signal rescue aircraft/

I know of a case where a 14 year old Young Man was stranded in remote Alaska, when his fathers Aircraft crashed on a scouting flight, after leaving him off to set out Base Camp. He was alone for three days, and used an Emergency Signal Mirror, from his Survival Kit, to signal a passing aircraft, and effected his own rescue. His father was a very good, and long friend of mine, and a very experienced Bush Pilot. He had taught his son, how to survive in the bush of Alaska. Just Say'ing....

All kids should have some survival training. That's why I never get into small aircraft. They crash way too often. And where I live ( I won't say where, so don't ask) there are never any survivors. I've looked into this and talked to a lot of pilots and none can remember a single crash where was a single survivor.

That just means those pilots do not have a lot of experience in crashing.... In Alaska, small aircraft, are just like TaxiCabs. They are a means of transportation between here and there. If you do not fly in them, you can't go anywhere. We just do not have the road Infurstructure, that the rest of the country. I know one very savvy Bush Pilot that has crashed a number of different aircraft. He has never caused the death, or injury, to any of his passengers. I would fly with him ANYWHERE. If he will fly, I will fly with him. If you gave to Fly, fly with someone who KNOWS how to crash...... And is good at it..........

LOL. I prefer NOT to crash in the first place. I've been in a lot of aircraft, even jumped out of a few. I would never fly with anyone has even crashed once. My friend has to fly in to his place, that's why I won't go there even in a TEOWAWKI. However, that's just me and anyone who is willing to use small aircraft certainly have my blessing to do as they wish. I certainly mean no offense to you or any other pilot.

Nobody prefers to crash number 1....
I have jumped out of many a plane, crash landed in a UH-60, hit some trees with the skids on a UH-1 (whooo) and had a close call in a twin otter..... Sh_t happens... be prepared.... and never be afraid that it may be you in the next accident... not worth the stress....be prepared.

Very true. Sounds like we could swap adventure stories. And the best preparation is avoiding the situation in the first place. Wish I had applied that to marriage...
