    Lets discuss Gas mask's.
Do we have any Gas mask Pro Monkeys.
Which one works the best, which last the longest filtering.
Which one will work against say a Weapons grade Ricin attack?

I'm eagerly awaiting any type of feedback on this thread. As I've got nada preps in this arena other than bandanna / shemaghs which is basically just for dust and grime

Our SCBA respirators will do for a limited time.... But for the long term issues.... I plan on staying far away from any such deployment of chemical weapons... Not very likely for the release of such a device way out here...

Most chemical weapons will do a number on your skin too, so having a mask without the suit will be of little use. However, having a mask for when the jackboots lob some CS gas through a window will buy you some valuable time.

I assume the Army still puts its boots in a room, then lets off a CS bomb to let them see what its effects are?

I have some good ones. Have to get back to you on the model and filters.
I also have some of the old (M17?) style ones that were really difficult to replace the cheek insert filters.

Edit to add: all of my masks are NBC which covers everything in the Nuclear, Biological and Chemical milspec.

Id be interested in hearing about them.
How do they fit with NV ? And weapon shooting?

I haven't bought a gas mask and probably won't. I have a tactical beard. I figure, if I actually needed a gas mask, I wouldn't have time to go shave.

    Something to think about . . . .

Ive got gas masks but its more to deal with St Helens going off again and the dust than anything else. Surviving in a chemical environment requires more resources than most of us can muster.

I'm well aware of that, I've been to NBC training, but that was 25 years ago. Im looking for some info on today's products. I don't want to buy and have it be a POS or not work correctly for the task.
I got through respirator fit test and medical evaluation every year. Just completed 2012\3's Friday.
If you dont have time to shave, try vaseline between the mask and face until you can. ( Not knowing how long of a beard a tactical beard is.)

Yup my area too, there are a couple other scenarios out there that are a real possibility.

Wasn't trying to discourage. Most people don't know about the beard thing or don't think of it, but you aren't in that crowd.

This site tells about the obselete ones as well as goes over what's available.

I knew you weren't trying to discourage me, in fact it's a great point you made[winkthumb] . There will be someone heading it that's for sure.
thanks for the reading material. [boozingbuddies]

Be aware that petroleum products can deteriorate some mask materials. Quite quickly in some cases, as in minutes.

I personally think that the Israeli issue gas masks, both civilian and military, probably represent the best value for the dollar right now because there are so many out there. They are easy to use, easy to get a tight fit, and use the almost universal 40mm nato threaded filters. Like somebody mentioned, the masks by themselves won't let you walk through a chemical war zone, but they do offer great protection against a range of less lethal munitions like CS gas. I would think that if you live in a city and you have any plans of bugging out in a SHTF scenario having one would be a must. If you live in the country and plan on staying as far away from everybody else as you can their importance on your must have list probably drops down quite a bit.

We've a couple different styles...Scott full-face for more aggressive agents, and MSA half-face for other situations. The filters are all P100 rated, mainly because of the high humidity in my AO.

The full face requires some adjustment to eye relief when shooting, the half face, not so much. Both are (IMHO) easier to fire with than the old M17 masks. Better all around visibility too.

Tyvek suits and nitrile gloves help complete the outfit, but they do get hot in the summer.

EO Tech and other large red dot sights work well with full face masks.
