Question for Akheloce in particular but also for anyone in a remote location.

Given the remoteness of your location and the long trip from town, do you buy your food and dry goods in large quantities or make frequent smaller trips to the markets. You talked about 4-wheeling 6 miles from your cabin to your truck. Do you use a trailer on your 4-wheeler?

I guess the logistics of all this amazes me - just getting yourself hunkered in is work [beer]

While I'd like to say that I have a good system of food storage, the reality is that at I go into town alot. I think that 4 days was the longest I ever stayed out there without driving into town for one reason or another. Of course, keep in mind that I'm always building, so many trips back to town are to pick up building supplies. Once I get it all done, I will certainly stock up on more food supplies. If I had to, I think I could make it a month or so on what I have now (canned goods, MRE's etc) without having to go into survival mode (hunting, picking berries- I do these for recreation now, just don't have to yet)

As far as the 4-wheeler, I have a Yamaha Rhino UTV that has a bed in it. I also have a trailer for it. Additionally, I have a freight sled to haul behind the snowmachine.

One thing that really helps is that I don't really have a 9-5 job. I'm in the nat. guard, but that's on a call-out basis. If I had the daily grind of HAVING to drive in and out every day, I think I'd burn out pretty quick.

The biggest pain in the butt is the gas. I sometimes will go through $300-$400 a week in gas, if I'm making a lot of trips. Hopefully, as the homestead gets more completed, I won't need to make so many trips.

Yeah, I guess the logistics could seem tough, but it's something I don't really think about that much anymore. As a matter of fact, I'm on TDY (temporary duty) in the lower 48 right now, and I can't get over the fact that no one wants to go anywhere- "it's too far." I mentioned a great steak place only an hour from here, and nobody would go with me. That kind of amazes me :)
