In the small Genset Community, Generac is known as GenerJunk… Kholer is much better stuff, and Onans built before 2000, are built like the preverbal “Brick Shithouse”… Look around for a J-Series Onan… They come in 3, 6, 12, and 17Kw versions, as well as Gasoline, Propane, Natural Gas, and Diesel versions, and either Air Cooled or Water Cooled… They are all built on the same Basic Design, using many of the same parts thru out the Series… Mean Time between In-Frame Rebuilds is 10k and 15k operational Hours, when routine maintenance which is about 200 Hours for LubeOil and Filter changes… Onan does a good job on rebuild parts as well..

Some of us would do just fine, and more of them will just die…

    Conspiracy theory confirmed.
Increased renewables adoption equals decreased power grid reliability.

long before I got into solar in the 1990s I got into battery power in the 1980s due to living in the mountains and the frequent black and brown outs that occurred both summer and winter , I was protecting our new Compac computer.
When we moved on the desert solar was practical and I ws working a marina getting used batteries to push the power into. In those days al we had were automotive light bulbs but they were still more efficient then any ac bulb available.
During the winter the sun rode the mountains and the panels didn't do well but still continued serving us. I rigged a small engine/alternator that made the difference.
Fact of the matter is, a battery bank can charge while the grid is working, and keep critical things going till the power comes back on. Battery chargers only pull an amp or two in full push so it's still a win win. A small engine alternator doesn't use much fuel and far cheaper/simpler to care for.
