if i stored rice in real foodsaver bags and vacuum sealed them,then put in a 5 gal sealed bucket would it last and stay bug free?or does it have to be mylar?thanks
I just keep mine in it's plastic bag put them in old popcorn cans(the ones ya get for Xmas ) seal with tape . I've had some of in there for over two years ,just test how long ,every now and then we take some out to eat ,no problems yet !!
The sharp rice grains can punch through the thin sealer bags. Put the rice into heavy-duty freezer bags first, not fully sealed. Then, seal that inside the Seal-a-meal bags. I put my rice into thicker heavy-duty clear plastic bottles with a recycle code of "1", then tape seal. Store in a cool dark place. Ate some that had been sealed for three years - tasted fine, no bugs!
It will probably work well enough for a while but the Mylar will keep out more moisture and oxygen and provide a better barrier. The thing is though, if you can seal the bag in a container like a bucket then the clear seal a meal bags may work just as well.
We just pour ours into 5gal. buckets, throw a few bay leaves in and close the lid. We have had it stored like this for years at a time. There have been a few bugs get into some stuff before but hey they just add more protien to the mix. OGM
The LOWES stores carry unused 'paint cans' in one quart and one gallon sizes. Seal the dry food in plastic bag inside the can, then seal the can - rodent proof! A five gallon bucket is NOT rodent proof.

I keep some brown rice in foodsaver bags, don't have any problems with leakage or punctures from the rice. The rice was stored originally in a mylar bag inside a 5gal bucket for 1 yr. It was taken out and put into rotation for use. We store 5cups of uncooked rice in a foodsaver bag. When a bag gets opened the unused portion gets put into a container that sits on our counter. On average we have rice 2-3 nights per week, so we tend to make a "big" batch on sunday then use the leftovers throughout the week.
