There was a bit of a discussion on that tome and it's contents back at our old homestead. Yes, it's been cussed and discussed a few times. The net of it as it applies to my current situation is stealth. Bear in mind that war and survival are not so closely allied to warrant direct comparison, but some of the principles apply. Very useful if rafted up with others of similar leanings and doing patrols.
All good in war. Sun does not really address a fully defensive posture except as part of deception on the way toward squashing the enemy. Here and now, most of us are looking at some sort of defense during an SHTF or TEOTAWAKI situation. The advice he gives is suitable if used to harvest an asset, be it land, oil, slaves, or fodder. But when I read him, I really didn't see ready application to the tribal arrangement we've often talked about; that is, operating from a fixed base with full intent to stay and hold rather than conquest or raids off property. Geronimo's hit and run tactics worked very well, for example, but at the end he had to hole up. Holding the hole is the hard part against heavily superior forces. And we must assume that the blue hats will have resources that the tribe cannot match. For a small tribe, we might have to assume that even MZBs could overtake. Rule of thumb used to be that it takes a 9 to 1 advantage to beseige or overrun a well defended position, not sure about that in this day and age with an Army of One. I think it is a fair assumption that the tribe will not be able to hold out for a significant time once it is located and TPTB decide we need to be addressed for whatever reason. When that happens, stealth and speed comes into play, and we bail out of the indefensible hidey hole. Then Sun's advice becomes far more relevant for foraging and survival operations. Or so it seems to me.
