I was looking at the site and thought, since this is a survival type forum, anyone who is coming here is going to expect more than simply survival. They are probably further along, in the process of gathering as much information as possible, or simply curious. With that in mind, I would like to suggest rather than a simple "Survival" Section, divide it into specifics. Like:

    Longterm Planning & Preparedness (logistics)

Survival Medicine (get phishi to moderate)

    Communication

    Retreat Design/Planning/Defense

    Small Scale Agriculture/Farming

Military Recon & Squad Tactics (find a military guy who would be able to post 10 - 15 stickys on the most common methods of squad movement, firing on hostile positions, etc. Perhaps having it as a Q & A forum versus a posting type forum. Like "Ask the (insert military guy's ranke, first name here)

Ok, time to make coffee. I have officially made my first post.

I got to thinking abou this after our conversation yester day melbo. I thought by dividing the tasks which are necessary to prepare, visitors/members could go to directly what they are intersted in versus having to look through an entire survival section.

Sorry to interrupt your conversation Clyde, with Clyde, but the whole French bashing section, I love that idea. Now, carry on. Clyde, and Clyde.

    f france

I agree. I general section to spew french hate would be perfect. I would even moderatet it, assuming moderation would be necessary.

    Very well then, communications -

There is an article in National Geographic, July 07 issue on "swarm intelligence." Seems to be the antithesis of mob psychology as commonly understood. The whole thing revolves around how herds, bees, mullet, locusts and the like operate, none having the big picture, just following simple rules of behavior. The scheme has been extended to mobs of small robots that exchange local information and translate that collection of tiny bits of info into collective action according to a few simple directions. Can't help but wonder if it couldn't be applied to a group of (pick your favorite disaster) survivors. There doesn't need to be a leader --. One thing it does say is that all the members of the tribe have to have certain characteristics, one might say all have to be on the same noble page, not the ignoble page of NO after Katrina.

See the issue with the Anopheles skeeter on the cover. It is not a difficult read, and may inspire some interesting discussion. [winkthumb] [beer]

I think that is the key. If you look at any patterns, you can see shared characteristics with comparable outcomes.

Successful people usually share characteristics but not necessarily skills. Conversely, long term unsuccessful people also share characteristics.

    It applles to almost everything.

Interesting observations, and you are right. Three people hurrying in one direction will draw followers, even if just to see why the hurry. Then they get caught up in the intrigue, too. That produced a light bulb.

been gone 3 weeks. South and then north.
Home to a fried Internet modem. Dial-up account. wow. sorry Blackjack... DU sux

Been thinking a whole lot about 'like minded' lately. We can't find it here at first glance. One persons woe is another's nothing. Bear is in HI and thinks about hurricanes, others think about earthquakes. Some think about UN blue bonnets while others try to find clean water.

Too much to try and file into one mindset. One guy may be willing to fight for the constitution while another is just trying to put a few extra cans of food by. Never fall into thinking all the rest are just like you just because you are on a 'survival board'

I have an interesting situation right now that truly follows the 'grass is always greener' ideal. Home swaps would be a great idea.
