A once-radical idea to build a 2,000-mile steel-and-wire fence on the U.S.-Mexican border is gaining momentum amid warnings that terrorists can easily sneak into the country. In Congress, a powerful Republican lawmaker this week proposed building such a fence across the entire border and two dozen other lawmakers signed on. And via the Internet, a group called weneedafence.com has raised enough money to air TV ads warning that the border is open to terrorists. Even at the Homeland Security Department, which opposes building a border-long fence, Secretary Michael Chertoff this fall waived environmental laws so that construction can continue on a 14-mile section of fence near San Diego that has helped border agents stem the flow of illegal migrants and drug runners. “You have to be able to enforce your borders,” says California Rep. Duncan Hunter, the Republican chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. He's proposing a fence from San Diego to Brownsville, Texas. “It's no longer just an immigration issue. It's now a national security issue.” Colin Hanna of weneedafence.com says “there is incredible momentum on this issue,” fueled by the specter of another Sept. 11. His group aired TV ads in Washington, D.C., this fall and plans more next year. Fencing the border, originally proposed in the debate over how to stop illegal immigration, is controversial. The Bush administration argues that a Berlin Wall-style barrier would be a huge waste of money — costing up to $8 billion. Border Patrol Chief David Aguilar says it makes more sense to use a mix of additional agents, better surveillance and tougher enforcement of immigration laws — and fences. But Hunter points to the experience in San Diego, where the number of illegal migrants arrested is one-sixth of what it was before the fence was built. “People have made stupid editorial comments about the Great Wall of China,” he says, “but the only thing that has worked is that fence.” ** "The Bush administration argues that a Berlin Wall-style barrier would be a huge waste of money — costing up to $8 billion." Two strands of barbed wire on each of two stretches of fence 10 yards apart with plowed ground between them. One might (tho' I don't advocate it) place some packages of appropriate materials in the plowed areas. The barbed wire would simply be a warning. Can't see that more than one warning is needed.
I will advocate it! I live in an area that used to be relatively drug, gang and crime free, not any more. they were criminals when they crossed our border, and they are criminals now! working at mcdonalds or gangbanging, I dont see any difference. mine the border.
I agree. I do not understand the lack of border enforcement and then the subsequent hindering of the volunteers that have decided to do something about it.
The whole idea is to merge Canada, the U.S. and Mexico by the year 2010. That includes economically as well. The open borders also provide the means for politicians to increase the size of government, expand control, and maximize profits for corporations by driving wages down. The general idea is that even though "theoretically" terrorists can cross our borders, our politicians know as well as I do that "terrorists" are a complete fallacy, and it is most times FEMA or some other covert operation (such as using mexican commandos trained in Ft. Benning, GA) to create a "horrible incident"....the idea is to create FEAR for those residing within the United States, have us kill each other off (See Mecha and Laraza) in gang warfare, and basically do their job for them. Additionally, there is no purpose for the government to close the borders besides perform the WILL of the PEOPLE, as we are asking. But, since WHEN does our government listen TO US, anyway? I agree that the borders need to be closed. Illegal immigration needs to be stopped. Our illegals already in this country do not need to be naturalized and given amnesty -they need to be sent BACK to Mexico.

I agree 100%. Building a wall will be very costly, but concertina wire and a few million landmines, thats the ticket!
But gentlemen, that is inhumane. Besides, are you willing to pay higher prices for your fruit and vegetables when shiftless highschool kids have to start picking your crops? Are you willing to have damaged and bruised fruit because the "I don't give a damn" attitude of our youth doesn't care if your tomatoe is mushy! Are you going to let your kids out of the house early so they can make it down to Martin Luther King Blvd in Las Vegas so that the rich can drive down and pick up the days migrant teenage workers so they can have cheap labor mow their yards! Who will be the vanguard gang against the asian gangs. Who would watch a TV show called "Mind of a teenager" Comon, NAFTA would fall apart! We need to be careful what we ask for, we just might get it!
Me, cynical? Well maybe, but the issue of illegals, no matter where they are from is still high on my list of things that need fixing.
