Welfare and other "entitlements" are basically hush money to prevent civil strife. The global ultra-rich have destroyed the economy to the point where "rags to riches" is an old timey fairy-tale, now riches to rags is far more common. The unemployment rate in the US is about 22%, and less than 25% have a good paying job. Perhaps the poor should just quietly starve ? More likely it would play out like the scenario laid out by Matthew Bracken.
