This reminds me of the contracting work I used to do. All my contractor would do is give us measurements and tell us how to do things and then he just leans on the tailgate of his truck drinking Milwaukee's best all day. He knew his stuff but it seemed a little screwed up that he was getting the larger cut for the jobs we did while he was getting drunk.
I worked for an a guy like that for about three days. He bowed up on me and flinched like he was going to hit me. His nose showered the ceiling and floor with much blood before he took a nice nap on the floor. Perfect right jab that I am proud of to this day.
One of the unions I had to deal with in wayback times forbid the foreman from touching the tools, much less do anything toward job completion. There was also a max crew size of 8, of which 2 had to be apprentices. Lots of wasted manpower, tho' supposedly the apprentices learned something --
My little brother is a thermite foreman on the railroad.... He's not supposed to touch the tools either but he gets right in there with his crew and they pour more welds then crews 2x their size most days. They're often done HOURS early and he lets his crew head home while still on pay. Needless to say, he's well loved. #proudbigbrother
Crew ratio's are still in effect to this day... decades later....LOL. Most of our foreman work but it ends up being a 50/50 effort... they do a lot of pointing at work, for others to do... it is a special class they take....delegation 101 or somethin.
In my trade , IT's A JOKE ,, Im so scarred of who is going to repair , Dio etc. my stuff ,when I can't . Im an commissioned instructor for the euro petrol crowd manufactures on the cutting edge stuff. The lack of everything is going to end when many my age & over are sent to pasture. I get questions of grade 12 they never learn't plus . Im to keep my posture & ride the question out , problem is you can only instruct to the lowest question asked & you loose the forward thinking momentum... Sloth , still slow
For sure my generation will leave a huge void in my trade. They still say "wow" when I tell them what I do, but none want to put in the time to learn it.
