Officials investigate missing ammo at Fort Bragg

    Updated 01:25*p.m., Saturday, September 10, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Officials at Fort Bragg say an investigation is under way into the disappearance of nearly 14,000 rounds of ammunition at the Army base.
Staff Sgt. Joshua Ford, a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division, says the ammunition went missing from the 1st Brigade Combat Team at Fort Bragg.
The Fayetteville Observer reports that Ford believed the ammunition was taken overnight on Tuesday. The 1st Brigade team was placed on lockdown for a few hours Wednesday night while officials conducted a search.
The missing ammunition can be used in an M-4 or M-16 assault rifle.
Ford says the 82nd Airborne Division and military police are taking the matter seriously and that "any amount of ammunition that goes missing" has "got to be accounted for."

I don't know anything about it. Why are you asking me? I've never been to Ft. Bragg and didn't see any ammo there anyway.

That is enough ammo to burn out a single barrel. Heck of a stockpile.

As the drug cartels will need ammunition by now; maybe another Fast and Furious operation?

I could be that it was just mis-counted. While in the Sinai, our checkpoint was doing it's ammo inventory by a couple of 2LTs (XO's and Commanders can't be bothered with counting bullets). They insisted we were missing 1000 rounds of 5.56 from our supply at the Checkpoint. My buddy and I recounted the ammo 3 times and came up with the right number.

About the time they were going to call the MPs and CID, I aske if they were counting the belted 5.56 correctly. They gave me an indignate attitude and said they knew how to count. They counted the 200 round SAW drums as 100 round drums and I got a counseling statement for my lack of "tact".

Sounds like a lot of ammo but that is only 17 ammo cans(800 size). Bet it is sitting in the back of some truck that was not supposed to be at the range.
