I talked to AlaskaChick, last night... She now has SIX Teams in training, specifically going to West Africa.... They are being very selective, about who they send, and the Proceedures, Policies, and Protocols, that these folks will operate under.

FREETOWN (Reuters) - The doctor leading Sierra Leone's fight against the worst Ebola outbreak on record died from the virus on Tuesday, the country's chief medical officer said.

The death of Sheik Umar Khan, who was credited with treating more than 100 patients, follows those of dozens of local health workers and the infection of two American medics in neighboring Liberia, highlighting the dangers faced by staff trying to halt the disease's spread across West Africa.

Ebola is believed to have killed 672 people in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since the outbreak began in February, according to the World Health Organisation.

The contagious disease, which has no known cure, has symptoms that include vomiting, diarrhea and internal and external bleeding. The fatality rate of the current outbreak is around 60 percent although Ebola can kill up to 90 percent of those who catch it.

The 39-year-old Khan, hailed as a "national hero" by the Health Ministry, had been moved to a treatment ward run by the medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres in the far north of Sierra Leone.

He died less than a week after his diagnosis was announced, and shortly before President Ernest Bai Koroma arrived to visit his treatment center in the northeastern town of Kailahun.

"It is a big and irreparable loss to Sierra Leone as he was the only specialist the country had in viral hemorrhagic fevers," said the chief medical officer, Brima Kargbo.

FOOTBALL BAN

Weak health systems are struggling to contain the disease despite international help ranging from doctors to safety equipment.

Guinea, where the outbreak originated, has seen new cases in the capital Conakry and in the eastern mining town of Siguiri, where a new isolation ward has opened. In both areas, the infection spread through contact with visitors from Sierra Leone, according to Aboubacar Sidiki Diakite, who leads Guinea's efforts to stop the outbreak.

In neighboring Liberia, the national soccer authority suspended matches nationwide, a spokesman said.

While the WHO has stopped short of recommending travel restrictions, the Togolese airline Asky has suspended flights to and from Sierra Leone and Liberia as concern over the spread of the virus has increased since the first death was reported last week in Nigeria's coastal city of Lagos, home to 21 million people.

The dead man was Patrick Sawyer, a consultant for Liberia's Finance Ministry in his 40s who had flown to Nigeria with Asky via its home hub, Lome.

His wife Decontee told the U.S. channel NBC News on Tuesday that he was an American from Minnesota.

Asky said it would no longer take on food in Guinea, and that passengers leaving the Guinean capital Conakry would be checked for signs of the disease before departure.

The airline added that medical teams would be deployed to screen passengers in transit through Lome.

Nigeria's largest carrier, Arik Air, has suspended flights to Liberia and Sierra Leone because of the Ebola risk.

On Monday, a U.S. administration official said President Barack Obama was receiving updates and noted that U.S. agencies had stepped up assistance to help contain the virus.

London (AFP) - Fears that the west African Ebola outbreak could spread to Europe grew on Wednesday, with the EU allocating extra spending and a leading medical charity warning the epidemic was out of control.

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) warned the crisis gripping Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone would only get worse and could not rule out it spreading to other countries.

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) has met global health officials on implementing measures to halt the spread of the disease, as the pan-African airline ASKY suspended all flights to and from the capitals of Liberia and Sierra Leone.

Meanwhile the European Union allocated an extra two million euros ($2.7 million) to fight the outbreak, bringing total EU funding to 3.9 million euros.

"The level of contamination on the ground is extremely worrying and we need to scale up our action before many more lives are lost," said EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

The bloc has deployed experts on the ground to help victims and try to limit contagion but Georgieva called for a "sustained effort from the international community to help West Africa deal with this menace".

In Britain, Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond was to chair a meeting of the government's COBRA crisis management committee to assess the situation.

Prime Minister David Cameron "does regard it as a very serious threat", Hammond told Sky News television.

"We are very much focused on it as a new and emerging threat which we need to deal with."

One person in England has been tested for the disease but the test proved negative.

Bart Janssens, MSF's director of operations, warned there was no overarching vision of how to tackle the outbreak, in an interview with La Libre Belgique newspaper.

"This epidemic is unprecedented, absolutely out of control and the situation can only get worse, because it is still spreading, above all in Liberia and Sierra Leone, in some very important hotspots," he said.

"We are extremely worried by the turn of events, particularly in these two countries where there is a lack of visibility on the epidemic.

"If the situation does not improve fairly quickly, there is a real risk of new countries being affected.

"That is certainly not ruled out, but it is difficult to predict, because we have never known such an epidemic."

- Unstoppable bleeding -

Since March, there have been 1,201 cases of Ebola and 672 deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Ebola can kill victims within days, causing severe fever and muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea and, in some cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding.

"We are lacking an overarching view to understand where the chief problems are," said Janssens.

"It's up to the World Health Organization (WHO) and to government to to deploy and organise the capacity and effort required to start to control this epidemic."

Togo-based pan-African airline ASKY, which serves 20 destinations, said it halted all flights to and from Liberia and Sierra Leone following the death of a passenger from the virus after they had travelled from Liberia to Nigeria via the Togolese capital Lome.

The 40-year-old man died in Lagos on Friday in Nigeria's first confirmed death from Ebola.

The virus hitchhiking across borders for the first time aboard the pan-African airline could lead to new flight restrictions aimed at containing outbreaks, the world aviation agency said.

"Until now (the virus) had not impacted commercial aviation, but now we're affected," ICAO secretary general Raymond Benjamin said.

"We will have to act quickly."

A statement is expected to be published in the coming days on next steps.

British Airways said it was maintaining its flights to west Africa but would monitor the situation closely.

In Romania, the foreign affairs ministry warned citizens planning on travelling to west Africa to avoid affected areas.

An interesting thought I just had. Being quarantined as a healthy person coming back and contracting ebola in quarantine. Though, ebola would have needed to have spread to the US for me to contract it in quarantine, theoretically. However, with the media coverage it's been getting, it may already have and we just don't know it.

Yeah I just saw a little news alert thing on Facebook about the evacuation of people in Liberia because of Ebola. Scary thing, it specifically said they were evacuating those already infected. WTF?! That's a BRILLIANT plan...let's not keep sick people quaratined, let's evacuate them and jumpstart a GLOBAL pandemic...

As I posted on the other ebola thread. This is the behavior that is what concerns me. This is why a whole hospital could get infected and things could spread from there.

The best way to stop ebola is to isolate it until the victims die off and are properly disposed of.
Unfortunatly that's not happening.
Take that American who died before coming to the US, he flew to Nigeria from Liberia while fully symptomatic and eventually passed out in the airport lobby in Nigeria.
