AVG 8.5 is being replaced by AVG 9 and you will have to upgrade to stay protected. Updates for your current AVG Free will not be available after December 1, 2009.
I have AVG Free 9.0 right now running on Windows 7 Ultimate. I didn't see any notice of the free edition expiring soon, but I'll check it out. AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Reviews and free AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition downloads at Download.com
Running ver 9 now (paid for it since free ran so well and I liked the way it works.) Running with XP Home on this machine. Daily full scan takes between 2 and 4 hours depending on how hard I'm working the processor. Porky, but very unobtrusive, plays nice with the other junk I have.
As long as AVG doesn't get bought out or becomes some Uber corporate garbage pit, I will continue to use it. If AVG fails me, I will just go find another. All the years I have used it, I have never had any problems, and I think it is in their best interest to keep a free version out there.
Ah, I was wondering if that was what you saw. I've seen that before and I think it is a ploy to get users that are using the free version to buck up and buy the pay for it version which actually is better. It's not like they point out in the ad that the free version is still available, so normal users wouldn't know that if they didn't research it.
The free version(9.0) is there, you just gotta dig for it.. I updated both of my computers last night...
