Here is my new 1977 AMC jeep motor. Started as a 304 bored 30 over now a 310 cubic inch. Has balanced lower end with all new rods, pistons, bearings and oil pump. Heads, ports are polished for better breathing and the cam is moderate to handle the Edelbrock intake and Carb. Headers are Hookers and the igniton is all old school points and plugs. She makes about 275 hp . Not quite my wife's new Toyota but mine sounds real nice. The guy who built it is one of best around here and like king of the hot rodders around here. He is in his 60,s and does great work. Its kind of crazy to put this kind of money into a 1977 but This jeep is solid. Great frame and suspension with all Dana drive train. New clutch and all new U joints. Its an Ugly Mother but has it where it counts. Im breaking it in now. Cant wait to see what she will do in the backwoods. Kingfish

Very nice! I do love carbureted engines!

(see, I'm so old I even know how to spell carburetor).

I did the same thing to a slightly newer F-150 a few years back - tore out all the electronic garbage and replaced it with parts a mechanic could repair (another dead art!).

Though I did go a little wilder. 351w in an 87 F-150 4x4. With 37-inch Goodyear MT/R's on it the Mustang chassis dyno said 408HP and 405LbFt at the rear wheels.

'course, that wasn't practical to be street driven regularly (gotta get back and forth TO the woods at that time) so I wound up detuning it to about 340HP. It sill embarrasses more 5.0 Mustangs at the traffic lights than not. [rofllmao]

The 304 AMC only made about 190 to 210 hp stock. Good torque though. This one has some giddy up in my little CJ 5 .
The builder wanted me to go Chevy small block. I passed as the conversion parts were expensive. Wiring harness, transmission bell housing etc.

It has a nice deep heart beat with the 3 inch pipes and turbo mufflers. When its broke in Im going to take her out in the trails and see how she climbs and powers through soft dirt. My summer tires are BF Goodrich 33 inch Mud terrains. Right now its got radials on it for plowing snow this winter. KF

I miss my 77 cj-7, my first vehicle. I put that jeep and the 304 thru hell and the motor just ran and ran. Can't say the same for anything i have owned built after 88.

I just finished the rear wire harness yesterday so it has tail lights and a gas gauge that works. I need a pair of mirrors yet and a custom tail gate. Then we are going to paint the entire thing cammo. Right now its black rino coated. It was a mud runner and was completely coated with Rino tar coating. When I say Ugly I mean UUUGGGLYYY. Ha Ha Ha Ha . Kingfish

Nothing wrong with AMC. I am an old AMC guy too, though my type was the Javelin and AMX cars. Had a very quick little 1968 AMX (two seater) back in The Day, that would blow the paint off the 455CI TransAms off the line. I topped out at 104 MPH though - they ate me alive on the open highway, but in town I was king! ;-) And mine had the little 290, not the big 390 cube motor!
I always wanted to get into classic Jeeps, but just never took the plunge.

When it comes to UGLY, I sure miss my old 1965 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup, and my 1973 Ford F-100! They were UGLY, but they were easy to repair ( not very often) and get parts for.....Sure wish I had them babies today!

Quigley, yours is pretty. I have the same tires for summer time. Mine are on Black steel rims though. I have the same header set up out the sides but the mufflers are just 3" Turbos bolted right to the headers. Here is a couple pics outside in the rain. Its getting wet today.

As you can see its pretty Ugly right now. But next spring it will be getting painted frame and all. Frame will be black Rino coating and the entire body multicam Cammo patterns of branches and leaves. I still need a couple of doors and a real top. Its CJ-7 Frame with welded together body that was half CJ-5 and CJ7 . Like I said Ugly but it has it where it counts. Very good drive line . Im not sure what Gears but I have OODLES of power. KF

I like it!, is the split between cj5 n 7 behind the fender?
It Looks very straight nice solid looking jeep.
BTW I just re wired most of my jeep and completely ran the head lights on relays and circuit breakers. The factory wiring cant handle halogen lights. the switch melts down.
and the wiper motor needs a really as well and it runs like it should.
I have a best top, fits really snug and no more snaps, it has channels very air tight.
keep updating here, I would love to see the changes as they happen.

    HA ! I wish!!

You see, this is where I REALLY SCREWED UP seriously!! Too much compression ratio.

Think about it; 408HP at the rear wheels. It is accepted industry wide that at least 25% of the horsepower is lost in the drivetrain. That means the engine is actually creating approximately 500HP for real.

I pay $8.87 per gallon for race gas. My truck won't run on that 93 octane ethanol crap. I could get by on the 93 octane non-ethanol, but (in this area) that is no longer available ~at all~.

I was using avgas (aviation gasoline) but got busted by the pump operator's boss so I can't really fuel at the local airport any more.

On the plus side, the smell of burning race gas is as good as Hoppes #9.;)

Maybe sum thicker head gaskets would drop yer compression down a lil bit. Cuz damn, I thought I felt bad when I run both tanks in my '94 F-150 down to E & it takes a hundred dollar bill to fill it up. Bet you never seen a fillup UNDER $100!!!
  17. sasquatch91

    sasquatch91 Monkey+

A fillup in my single tank 99 f150 is 80+ dollars. I've got the 4.6 I'm it, just leveled it and slapped some 33" dunlop mud rovers, was goin to swap to 4.10s but the factory 3.55 are suprisingly not that bad, truck has 256000 miles on a factory drivetrain.

I got plates on the Jeep today. It was a little chilly but I took her for cruise around federal lands today. Back roads and two tracks. Had a blast bumping around out in the country. Another few hours and she will be broke in. Once the rings are seated Im going to run her a little harder and see what she does. As it is I cant step on the gas on pavement without burning both rear tires. Need bigger meats. KF

Now you all are making me sad. I had to sell my 76' CJ 5 a few years back. I am hoping to get a new Rubicon ZOMBIE model though lol.

if youre using carburators instead of efi...
add a riser below your carb, one of those with the pcv input
and add a mechanical shutoff to it and a breather
when you get up to speed open this and it near doubles your mileage
used to do it all the time on my ford V8's
how many 351 c's do you know that got 25-35 mpg highway :D
